    Hello!

Just have a query that I hope some motor heads in here will be able to help me with.

I'm currently in the process of moving from North back to South. What's the story for VRTing my car? I'm a bit confused about the whole process as most of what I've read is about importing a car if you already live in the South and have to produce the bill of sale with proof that you've not had it in the state for more than 30 days or something?

    Totally confused

How long have you owned your current car? If you owned it for longer than 6 months up North then you might qualify for a VRT exemption.

    More information here:

AFAIK if you have owned it for more than 6 months,Vrt is free :thumb:

    Thanks guys,

I read the stuff on citizens information before but still can't make head nor tail of it.. (i'm thick like that!)

Haven't had my current car for more than 6 months but I'm only in the inital stages of moving ie nothing has actually moved yet it's all thoughts and planning.

interesting to know how you found it up there ?
I find the place fascinating and things seem to be better run but imagine I would find it hard to live there ?

I'm from a border county so really it wasn't so different for me because we were always over and back for something, socialised there, shopped there, studied there etc etc..

I think my best bet (for my situation) is to fill out the 'export' part of my V5C form. Can anyone tell me what my next steps should be? Can I keep it insurance with my NI Insurance company untill I get all the paper work back? Do I have to have the log book back from the DVLA after I send off the export form?

I am so useless at this stuff!

    The process is;
    1. Make an appointment to VRT/Import the vehicle

    2. Do not send V5 back to Swansea, you will need it wen you re-register the vehicle in the south, they need the complete V5

    3. You will need bank statements from North showing income etc

    4. You will need rent book or mortgage statement with Northern address to show you lived there

    5. You will need to also show Insurance cert for previous 6 months in your name.

You don't need to send off the V5. You'll need proof that you lived in the North before moving down, so stuff like banks statements, rent agreements etc. You'll need proof that you owned and drove the vehicle in Northern Ireland for a minimum of 6 months prior to relocating so they'll look for the logbook, proof of insurance, tax receipts, fuel receipts etc. Your best bet is to ring the tax office local to where you will be relocating to, tell them you will be looking apply for VRT exemption and ask what they'll need to do so. It's also worth noting that you can't sell the car for 12 months once it's registered here and you'll have to pay the VRT.

If I'm just moving down and not looking for the exemption from VRT (because I won't be) do I still need to bring all those documents? Don't want to land at the appointment to find out I need stuff and to have to make a new app and it to cost more... vrt is plenty to be paying out in the first place!

You can use the VRT calculator here to get a ballpark figure of how much the VRT will be on your car:
