Am I getting a good deal?

I'm looking at buying a 172 tuscon executive E31,995 (no finance). I have a 2007 Toyota avensis saloon 240,000km to trade in.
I'm useless at haggling and this would be my first new buy.
So at the dealers he went out and checked the toyota and came back in and said how does E27,995 sound and I just said yes that's fine without any hesitation. It's part of the up to 4 grand scrapage offer they have at the moment.

He said he hadn't many left in the white that he would need a deposit of E500, so i said id be back within a week or two with a deposit.
So I'm wondering am I giving up too easy or could I get a better deal or maybe an extra thrown in?

He's essentially giving you €4000 for a 10 year old car that you wouldnt get €4000 in private sale , on that note its good

But ur going in with cash not finance so u have more leverage , basically he needs you more than you need him , i'd pretend that a diff hyundai dealer came down to 25,995 and see how you go

Don't be rail roaded into it , you have all the cards

Btw im looking at the tuscon myself

My brother has a 161 white with full panoramic sunroof and full leather with only 8,000 km on it , he paid €36,995

Dealer finance is worth something to a dealer as he will probably get a commission from the finance company for bringing in new business.

Also in order to know if you have got a good deal you need to price the same deal from more than one dealer otherwise you have nothing to compare against. That 4k discount is coming from the distributor rather than the dealer so there might be a bit more movement on the price from the dealer as he will still get his margin. But you have to shop around and learn how to haggle otherwise you will get nowt.

Thanks for that, I'll give another dealer or two a try and see if I can play them against each other. It was the distributor offer that got me thinking that maybe I wasn't getting as much a deal as I thought I was.

Another thing to remember is that your old car won't actually be scrapped either. The dealer will sell it on through the trade for whatever they can get for it.

Trade value in an 07 Avensis would only be €500 or so. No harm in shopping around though.

Also, the Tucson sells itself so I wouldn't bank on the 'he needs you' angle, as frustrating as that is.

Cash buyers had an advantage years and years ago for reasons which will go unmentioned.

However, you definitely don't have that now. Getting you to take out a loan is much more lucrative. Much more.

Cash buyer doesn't literally mean a bag of cash. A straight deal without trade in is another way of saying the same thing.

I tried another garage and was given another 100 off, a full tank of fuel and a set of premium mats. He said its the high mileage that really holds the discount back, but I'm happy I got that little bit extra.

A 10 year old car with 240k km is high mileage? That's about 15k miles a year! That's not high mileage.

Tell him to give you €500 off plus the mats and fuel and you'll shake his hand today. If not, go back to dealer 1 and look for the same deal.

    Good luck!!

Just to note, it's €4000 guaranteed on a Tucson rather than up to €4000.
