Advice needed: New putter or Electric Trolley

    Hi All,

Looking for some advice, I am thinking of investing in some new equipment at the end of the month. I have enough to purchase either a scotty cameron putter or an electric trolley. I want both but can only afford one of them. I currently have an old odyssey 2 ball putter (about 14 years old) so I feel that technology has moved on since I got this. I also have a 3 wheel push trolley which is fine but I feel I could benefit from an energy point of view from not pushing this around the course.

Would love to hear what you all think?

Putter technology = 99% marketing. You might get a slightly more forgiving putter, but better spending your money on a putting lesson. And that's coming from someone with an incurable weakness for nice putters. That said, if you want a nice shiny new putter, then that's different :) But if you're currently putting ok, then don't change it.

You can be sure an electric trolley will work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

new technology won't make the putts drop if you don't hit them right.
IMO a 14 year old 2 ball white hot (I have one too) can be as good as any new putter. a 14 year old driver though.... different story.

    Get the trolly

Electric trolley every time .... you will have an instant benefit in terms of energy levels and less stress on your arms. While an expensive new putter may look good to wave around but you have no guarantee that it will improve your game.

Trolley and get a new putter grip to "jazz" up your new putter.

Having more energy during a round is definitely going to save more shots than a new putter.

If you haven't already, try the new fat grip on your putter.

Two pieces of equipment that made big differences to my golf - a GPS and electric cart.

What age are you Jp, If you were born in 85 i would say get the putter,
you're far too young for an electric trolley

Yeah 32 this month but have had a bit of a dodgy back lately which ive had some physio on, thats why im thinking of the trolly.

Yeah i got a laser pointer, suits my course as there are very little dog legs and that this significantly improve my game, so thats why im thinking whats next to take my handicap down to where it should be.

You can make yourself a better putter but will probably struggle to make an electric trolley.

ah i see, well then the trolley is probably the wise move,
i do alot of stretching before a round these days and i found it's really helped,
like you i had back issues but they were muscular so a foam roller regularly fixed that and now i'm playing better than ever,
a new putter does bring enthusiasm though, you start looking forward to putts

Get the trolley. My ping putter is over 25 years old, a hand me down from my old man. Maybe try a supersize grip for a change

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭jokser250

Get the electric trolley , you ll never look back !!

Trolley mate. I finally got one myself this year, will never go back.

Trolley 100%. Not a bit tired after 18 holes with an electric trolley. You could pick up a 2nd hand scotty for €100.

Never liked scotty Cameron putters at all.

Trolley and get yourself reasonably priced putter like this odyssey one below too. Shouldn't break the bank.

    Scotty's are way too dear.

    Trolley all day long
My putter is that old also and I would cry if anything happened it

    the chap is 32 not 52 !
Each to their own though, i got a new putter recently and it improved my putting no end, wasn't the putter essentially, but it gave me a reason to practice and concentrate more.
Unless you're unfit or much older i don't see the need for an electric trolley personally

Because believe it or not they will improve anybody's score by at least a couple of shots per round .

Without a shadow of a doubt. I don't have one. But whenever I'm playing in a big competition, I'll use one. Not tired at all so helps with your concentration too. Go to any senior scratch cup/top amateur event. They're all using them, age has nothing to do with it.

it's not even just tiredness, its the weight on your shoulder from carrying or dragging. sure, it might not be much, but it will affect your swing.

i have one for years. went back to carrying a while ago when my da borrowed it for a while..... F that!!

I had a caddy the other day pushing mine around, and you know what. that was even better.....

if you say so, but using a normal trolley for me and i'm older than the poster makes no difference at all to how tired i am,
it's not like you're pulling concrete in the bag.
so i'm not sure how you equate it to a couple of shots per round,
but each to their own, if i was him i'd go for the new putter that's all

I'd but the putter only because it's nice bling . I'd never change putter because my putting is bad , I'm still on an original tri hot from 2004 . Have had a few grips since . Now I'm after superstroke grip not sure of the name but same size as my own 2.0 but in the ribbed version

One thing I would to get if I had spare cash would be custom head covers with the kids names and a Czech flag on them

    For the summer
In my bag on the trolley there are

2 rain tops long and short sleeve
    Rain pants
    Shorts
    1 sleeveless top
    Umbrella
Woolly hat normal cap waterproof cap
    Sunglasses
Small 1st aid and tablet pouch
    Sunscreen
    fly repellant
    Mittens
    Tees
12 balls at least I'd say
    Few waters
    Lucozade
    4-5 bars
    Banana or maybe a sambo
    Laser Rangefinder
    GPS
There's not a hope in hell I'd carry all that but it's there if I need anything or if she locks me out for coming home late

In the winter I carry as it shortens the walk due to ropes around greens
but the carry bag has very little other than clubs ball and laser

Anybody that thinks carrying or pulling a bag for 4 hours doesn't affect performance is dreaming

There's very few sports where technology hasn't been used to make things lighter and easier for a competitor
Given yourself and your back a break
Especially if you play 2 days in a row at weekends

well you mention tiredness. I already said that is not the only thing. it is also about the strain carrying and dragging a trolley has on your back. you might not think it's much, but it is enough to make a difference

i would hazard a well educated guess that if you are good off 12, having an electric trolley would certainly have you sniffing at single figures. you aren'g going to drop the shots in your next round or 2, but over a few months i bet you would

Thanks everyone for their advice. Based on most of the feedback i think i will benefit most from an electric trolley and perhaps i can get a new grip on the putter.

My next question is does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy, i was looking around and most places its about €550 for an 18 hole lithium battery (assuming this is the way to go), i looked on the likes of done deal and adverts but nothing looks decent there.

I did see one on sports direct for 455 but i assume its probably not very good http://ie.sportsdirect.com/dunlop-18-hole-lithium-electric-trolley-with-battery-and-charger-960081?colcode=96008101

Like most things, you get what you pay for, so unless you find a 2nd hand bargain.... I think Lithium is definitely the way to go.

I have a Golf Glider which is pretty indestructible and you can buy direct from them in Churchtown which should avoid a retail mark up. But others speak well of Powakaddy etc so you take your pick.

I'm some cases if you can buy the same trolley with the cheaper battery buy that and get a high output battery made up . Because the lito battery is made in most cases 11850 batteries

Halpennys /Mc Guirks have regular sales with 20%off, including trolleys. Just buy something small and join their loyalty scheme. They will text you anytime they have a sale....seems to be nearly monthly now. Halpennys would sell and fit the new grip for you too

Yes, and I was stating yours was ignorant. That's the point of the website. You were blatantly slagging younger people for using the carts.
