    https://www.kildarenow.com/news/british-company-seeking-develop-e50m-proton-beam-cancer-centre-magee-barracks/162293

"A British company are planning to spend €50 million turning Magee Barracks into a state of the art cancer treatment clinic.

Their presentation stated that 50 highly paid professionals would be employed in the clinic and it would indirectly boost employment in the town. A similar clinic in south Wales is said to be worth a staggering £87.8 million to the local economy.

There would still be enough room left on the site for the development of 400 houses, meaning the land could be used for multiple different developments."

Great news for the town and cancer patients also.

Well actually as it stands, the small subset of patients who require this treatment are currently covered for it under the HSE, via the HSE's Treatment Abroad Scheme. In 2015 it was 22. To put that into perspective, between 2008 and 2014, the NHS paid for treatment abroad of 400 people in total. I dont have Irish figures for 2016, but Id guess that again, it is quite small.
