Flight Cancellations and Refund for Flight Charges: Which airlines are best?

This has never happened to me before.

I booked with CityJet to travel to London this coming Friday.

Due to a family bereavement, I will not be traveling.

I have just checked online with CityJet, and I will be refunded the taxes, not the fare. i.e. I will receive about €79, they will keep €90+.

I haven't cancelled yet. I may, if it's possible, just book a flight for a later date.

For future reference, which airlines are the most accommodating in this regard?

Can you take out insurance to cover this type of thing? If so, is it worth it?

Thanks for any advice and feedback.

    D.

    Ps.

Mod, please correct typos in thread title. (Always wondered why this isn't possible, or is it?)

    Thanks.

We had a similar experience a short while ago. Aer Lingus were great. All sorted with a short email and quick telephone chat.

In general airlines do not refund flight charges (unless you book one of the super flexible tickets). However many are sympathetic to cases of bereavement etc. best bet is to ring them up and actually speak to someone

A friend has had Ryanair flights refunded due to a family bereavement, just need to send in proof of death and proof of your relationship.
