Would you be suspicious if you found a slightly damaged number plate under the boot cover when viewing a used car?

You need to give more information, was it a different number plate to the car? Was it a dealer or private sale? Plenty other ways to check out the car also.

If everything else added up, no. An NCT fail perhaps? ask the seller

Same number plate. Not a main dealer. I didn't think anything of it at the time and guy mentioned it got damaged only thought of it after.

It's only a piece of the evidence, it wouldn't worry me unless it combines with clear evidence of screws being scratched from being loosened or tightened on the two front wings or the bumper and cross members. You have to take a wider look. Also check reg through an online check for any write off claims

Sure give the front a back a good check, probably minor if the plate is lightly damaged.

Does the car have a towbar? Might the plate not be for towing a trailer?

Was the car cleaned up in with a lot of effort made? Could just be the seller wanted to improve presentation by putting new plate on after other was damaged.

Slightly damaged in what way? Slight crack, piece missing? Or just scuffed?
