In the 2.0 litre diesel bracket which model Merc or BMW comes with a good rep for what you get in terms finish, performance and resale. I would be looking for something in the 30k ball park figure. Looking at the model choice and different specs in both its a bit of a challenge.

Have you got a size and age in mind?

Sorry I was thinking 2.0 litre diesel automatic- I have a 141 Accord low miles to trade so I guess the depends on the model as to what year I could expect but I'd be looking at a budget of 14-15k with the Honda

You're probably looking at a 3 Series or C Class for that sort of money. Most of the 3 Series sold here will probably be lower powered 318d/316d. In the C Class you're probably looking at the 2.1 diesel or the smaller Nissan/Renault derived units.

Would you consider a Passat Highline?

    Or maybe a Volvo S60:

Yeah but you're looking at 3 series/c class or 5 series/e class. Two different sizes. The 3/C would be much smaller than your Honda,

There is also the Audi A4/A6 to consider, the A4 would be a bit bigger than a C class/3 series.

I have narrowed the search down to 5 series 518D V potentially a Hyundai tuscon executive model.
I'm going to drive the Tuscon but I was wondering about the 1.7 engine and whats it's like to drive power wise?
The 518D was very zippy to drive I was impressed but obviously its a little more pricey.

Tucson is very overrated IMO. While it looks nice the ride is firm, the engine gruff, interior has zero design flair and even in Executive trim there are loads of cheap plastics on show. The 518D is on a different planet in every regard.

It's in a differnt league power wise to a 518d, plus the driving dynamics are completely different.
Begs the question, are you overlooking a lot of cars that would tick all the boxes in the vast middle ground between a Tucson and a 518

OP, your list is all over the place. What criteria are you using?

I agree with Bazz completely. Tucson is a mass market seller, Irelands best selling car of 2016 as far as I know and the 518d is a premium German saloon although at the lower end of the range.

    Tucson good points:
Cheaper, high driving position, SUV shaped boot for tall items may be a bonus. Long warranty

    518d good points:
More power, more comfortable, better drive, more refined. Boot probably bigger but differently shaped. Possibly roomier inside the cabin too.

I don't really have a criteria just driving a few.
The BMWs speak for themselves. The cost of trade is the kicker. I drove a two litre auto superb - great car. A Honda CRV allowing for the model change represents decent value for a high spec finish. I'm swaying towards the CRV.
