Self-assesment acknowledgement Form / Maternity Benefit

    Hello...

I am hoping for some advice / guidance.

I am new to Ireland, currently pregnant and submitting my application form for Maternity Benefit.

I am applying for maternity benefit based on the 40 weeks PSRI stamps I have received in my part time job. However, since January 2017 I have also started a small business. The application form asks that I submit a "self assessment acknowledgement form received from the Revenue Commissioners and the accompanying Form 11 for the relevant tax year"

Can somebody explain to me what the self assessment form is and it necessary to complete it now? Or is this something I do in 2018 for 2017?

I am pretty sure that I do not need to worry about the Form 11 until 2018.

I really struggling to find clear information. I can't get through to Revenue and Maternity had me on hold for 45 min before I was disconnected :/

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ya, if you only registered this year, you don't have to file the form until next year.

When you registered, did you get an acknowledgement from revenue with regard to the tax registration number for IT?

Thanks for responding. No, I haven't registered. Is that something I am suppose to have done? I thought that filing a Form 11 next year would be sufficient, but maybe not?

Is it complicated to register a business? And is it still necessary to register if I am just trading under my own name, Sole Trader?

    Thanks again.

    Hi there

As you started the business in January 2017, then you don't have to file a Return until Oct 2018 at the earliest. In fact, as we are in 2017, you cannot file a Return until January 2018 at the earliest.

I suspect if you contact the maternity benefit people and explain this, you should be okay.

Re Revenue, as you are trading, you have to register the business with the Revenue and you should make sure you are VAT compliant etc.

Best of luck with it. PM if you would like some assistance.

You won't have received a self assessment acknowledgment form from Revenue if you haven't registered as self assessed with them.

It's not sufficient to just file a form 11. You need to complete a Form TR1 in order to register.
