Susi grant for changing course student

    Hello everyone,

I am currently a Maynooth student, but having been unsatisfied with my course and the college itself I have decided to drop out and to repeat my leaving cert in 2017/2018.

I have a question concerning the susi grant. I have been receiving a grant and my college fees for first year were completely paid.

If I apply and get accepted into a new course in a different university, say Trinity or UCD, what are the chances of me receiving a grant again?

The susi states "Starting a New Course or Changing Course in 2017-18?
If you have completed your course or if you will be changing course or college or starting a new course, including entering an add-on year, in the 2017-18 academic year and if you wish to apply for a student grant, you should make a new grant application when the SUSI online application system opens on 3 April 2017."

As you can see, I can still apply for a grant if entering another course. This is confusing as I have read on different forums that susi wouldn't pay for a student who is not entering the higher education for the first time.

Another question: If they refuse to pay for the first year again, will I continue to receive my grant for second, third and the following years?

Last questions: If I am unfortunate and fail to get a grant ever again. Would it be possible to take a student loan. And, would my life be screwed if I take a loan?

Thank you for reading and if you have any information I would appreciate if you can share it.

I am feeling extremely anxious about this thing.

0% You will not get a grant for any year you have already gotten a grand for, i.e. if you got a grant for first year you won't get a grant for first year again unless you wait 4+ years between leaving college and starting again.

You will get a grant for any year you have not gotten a grant for previously if you qualify in the means test.

You can get a student loan, AIB give a loan of €10,000 to students with 0% interest until you graduate.

Also, remember you won't qualify for the free fees initiative for any year you have started before so your fees will be €8,000+ for those years.

So, I will have to pay €8,000+ for first year again. But will I qualify for free fees initiative in second and remaining years? (I have only attended first year in college) or do you mean that from now on I have to pay the contribution(?)/free(?) fees for every year????

You will just have to pay for first year.

Riiiiight, well, things could be worse ;) Hope to have the loan paid by 50. I have a question, do you think that dropping out of college/ and then getting in a new course somehow affects the decision of susi regarding who they give a grant to? I mean, now that I'm so indecisive with my courses, would they seriously consider before giving me a grant for second year?

The grant application is based on progressionew and means. You may qualify only when you progress and qualify under the reckonable income thresholds.
