I recently purchased a Toyota GT86 (upgrade from gen 7 celica). When I owned the celica I could find lots of forums / groups but seems pretty hard to find any groups I Ireland for the gt86.

Not sure how many are actually out there in Ireland, there's only been 40 sold here, and 11 BRZ's
Facebook groups is the most likely place to find owners, not many people setting up small car forums these days.

Only 40! Wow, I thought there would be more to be honest. Facebook is mainly UK and USA, nothing Ireland really. Ah well, was worth a try.

There's two, here in Galway. One's red and the other's black. Haven't seen many, but i've seen a good few american/canadian ones online. They seem to be really popular there.

To be honest, I don't think it was made for comfort, but in saying that, I have gone on a few road trips with my 10-year-old son and neither of us can complain about comfort. The longest we have sat in the car in one go would be about 4 or 5 hours (Athlone to Kerry and a little driving around Kerry). It's certainly not uncomfortable, but it's not as comfortable as say a merc or Lexus.

As for driving... This is where they shine! They were made to be a drivers car! These cars stick to the road! Personally, I have to use the cruise control to keep myself from getting a speeding ticket. It's like the car wants you to push that peddle to the metal lol. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, in fact, I can't drive her enough.

It likes to be revved and seems to respond better to revs between 5k and 7.5k. There seems to be a small lag in torc just below 5k revs. But that hasnt seemed to have bothered me yet. Im either in traffic at low revs (still some nice torc at lower revs) or on motorway where it really doesnt matter what revs you're at, you are still more powerful than most of the cars you're sharing the road with. So far, I have been very happy with how she performs in all driving conditions.

The traction control is outstanding. You can take corners in this car like no other. I tested this on some of the chicanes of the Ring of Kerry. Literally, where you normally slow down for a bend in the road (to say 50kph for example) this car will go around that same bend at twice the speed and you will feel very safe doing it. I was at the cliffs of Moher a short while ago. It was about 4am, and pitch dark (other than my headlights) and a sharp bend crept up on me. I went around that bend like it wasn't even there. I nearly crapped my pants at the time lol but it was then I truly realized how good this car performs on backroads! It was frightening and incredible at the same time.

It's actually really hard to describe the driving experience in this car. It's like no other. Your driving position is excellent, gear changes are really nice, the clutch is nice and solid, steering is sensitive but very easy to control.

In saying all that, the best way to describe this car is to test drive one. Don't just take it for a spin, get it onto a back road and drive it like its meant to be driven. Put it on a motorway and see how well it picks up when you need to overtake... in fact, you will probably already be going faster than the cars on the motorway before you even merge from the onramp. Even in 5th and 6th gear, you still have a lot of power going up-hill.

What I would suggest, like I did, is not to buy a brand new one. you save about 15k just buying a trade-in. Mine is a 141 reg, I paid 25k. Brand new they are about 42k upwards.

lol, wasn't prepared for where the last bit of that sentence went lol. I will admit that I did a double take when it passed. I love the stealth look of black.

Have been half keeping an eye on these for the past 6 months or so. There have been a couple of nice looking 141/132 models you could probably pick up for €20k. I do mainly city and motorway driving though so it would probably be wasted on me, I'm on the lookout for a mk7 Golf GTI instead I think.

Interesting if that stat about only 40 in the country is true, as there have been 5 or 6 second hand models for sale recently. There's also a UK import Subaru BRZ going at the moment.

Black, for me would be the only color I could drive for this car. I think it gives that car a more sporty and sleek look than other colors. When its waxed and buffed you can see every line and curve and it just gives the car some extra "awesome" to the look. Other colors seem to make the car look kinda bland or flat.

I have to admit, my head turns back to it every single time I walk away from it. My wife was slagging me off the other day saying I look at the car more than her lol.

I do the same type of driving mostly. The school runs, shops (boot is big enough for the shopping with room to spare). I haven't seen a 141 for less than roughly 25k yet. When I was looking, I was particularly looking for a main dealer to make sure I had a warranty. It is very much a daily driver, or a track car, or a backroads car.. that's what, I think, is so great about this car. It is just as good at nipping around the city as it is at motorway driving, or taking sharp bends on back roads.

MK7 Golf is a nice car, and worth the investment but if I had a choice between the 2, i would pick the GT86 without a second glance! The only thing that would sway me is the back seats if I needed back seats, but my kids are still small enough to not need a lot of legroom in the back :p

I know exactly hwhat you mean, and I feel the same. The red one, to me looks like a normal toyota from the front, and looses that sportyness.

I think most people that admire cars, along with people that have their "dream" car, do that. I'm the same with mine, and it's not even that special.

Hmmm, there was a silver 141 for sale at a dealer last week or so listed at €22k. Seems to be gone now though. Yeah I'd say it would handle city driving no problem, I just feel like that's not what it was made for :-)

hehe, your feelings are correct. It was made for going sideways lol.. but it will do city driving just fine too.

That is one beautiful car and I must say it looks the business in black. I have a soft spot for Toyota as we now have a RAV4 and while I was there I enquired about a test drive and they didn't have any in Kilkenny as they don't like to have certain cars in stock due to their location. I would be going for brand new as I'd be trading my own v40 against it.

Only bad thing is it's petrol and I do high mileage well between 100-150km a week.

Im more than happy to let you bring mine for a spin when i'm down that way in a few weeks. You really have to try it to understand it. I could talk all day about how great it is, but the only real way to tell how good it is, is to drive it.

If its motorway driving, it's not too bad on the juice. I put about 300 to 400 miles a week on mine. Good example might be going to Kerry from Athlone (mainly backroads, but a good bit of motorway too). I put 50 in the tank, which got us there and then some driving around, and I topped it up with another 20 when I was there and that got us home with about a quarter tank to spare.

Athlone to Lusk and back takes about half a tank (or just over) if you are not booting it down the motorway and just sitting on 120k with cruise control.

You don't need a diesel car at your mileage, that really is very, very low mileage and less than half the usual average.

I'm on the Irish Celica club facebook group for a little while now. Haven't gone to any meets yet. They did have one close to me in Roscommon a few weeks ago that I missed but I hope to get to one before the summer is out. As much as I love the GT86, I miss the Celica, and would be nice to get to a meet to see some and what people have done with theirs.
