Hi guys, have booked for nct in June, just wondering if I change my car soon can I get a refund from nct. I paid on line and apparently the money is taken when the nct test is done. There is nothing on the nct site about this. Any information please?

You have to cancel with no less than 48 hours before the test if you don't want to be charged. If you cancel within the final 48 hours you will be charged a cancellation fee the same will apply if you don't cancel and just don't turn up.

You can cancel without charge provided is outside 5 working days to the test.

    From NCTS.ie
"If you cancel your confirmed appointment with less than five working days notice (Mon. - Fri., not including the day of the test) or fail to show up for the test, a €22.00 surcharge will be applied when you next bring your car for testing. A similar surcharge of €11.50 will apply in the case of a re-test."

Having a valid nct can help when you are trying to get rid of your car though, which you mentioned you may be doing

It can still help to have it in place for a longer period.

    Bit of a lottery

Wait til June ,if it fails buyers can see it's due a retest and you're quickly boxed into a corner having to get it through to keep the value

Alternative is to sell now with some test

From my memory you put in your reg if you were going to book the test and then it tells you can cancel or reschedule your test.

It was the same way up until Thursday. I was trying to get a sooner days for my NCT. I typed in my reg and I had to click one place to cancel my booking and another place to reshudule the date.

If so your nct 2 months early, will it last for 14 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Yes, the new date will still be the anniversary of the first nct.
Also, if you did nct 2 months late you'd get 10 months.

Okay, they must have changed their set up, because I remember radio programmes about going ahead of Nct date and only a max of 12 months cert.

I know people NCTing 07 cars this year and their getting two year certs still but you've to do it more than 90 days in advance!
