Anyone tax a van privately lately,1.9 transporter here and thinking about taxing it privately, seem to be really clamping down on the commercial tax at the minute? How much would it cost to tax it privately?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

If it is used privately, it must be taxed privately. If it is used commercially, it must be taxed commercially. This has always been the case.

What's the year of the van? Before the cut off point in 2008 private tax was based on engine size. After that on CO2 emissions.

    Not true.
When I worked in the MTO we often had commercial vans that were cheaper to tax privately. Once it was taxed no one cared.
The only proviso is that you need commercial insurance to get commercial tax.

You must also have commercial insurance to use it commercially, but thats an issue for the insurance companies.

If you have commercial insurance you can get private tax.

    True.
But what if it's used for both?
IMO it should be taxed commercially if used for both purposes.

    Not true.
If van is not taxed commercially, only other tax category it can go on is engine size based.

Yes I've been told is based on engine size even if newer than 08... Does this mean a 1.9 transporter or similar will be 673 for the year?

It would be cc rates regardless of whether it's pre or post 08.
