Ennistymon RWC - Elevated THM's

The EPA Remedial Action List Q1 2017 ( http://www.epa.ie/pubs/reports/water/drinking/Q1%202017%20RAL.pdf ) listed Ennistymon RWS, Co. Clare as having 'Elevated levels of THM's above the current standard in the Drinking Water Regulations'.

Is the water from this scheme safe to drink at the moment?

Is there any action being taken to remedy the situation?

    Hi pjcarrow,

If any THM exceedance posed a potential health risk, the HSE would have recommended the implementation of a Drinking Water Restriction Notice. However, in this instance, the HSE have not recommended that a water restriction is imposed on the Ennistymon supply. The HSE have consistently stated that the risk from not disinfecting the water far outweighs any risk from THMs, which are a by-product of disinfectants.

Irish Water have committed to the EPA to make the necessary upgrade works to the treatment plant supplying Ennistymon, will be completed by December 2018.

We hope this helps and if you have any other queries, please let us know.

    Thanks,
    Mairead
