Great documentary on BBC 2 last Tuesday, a Horizon programme looking at psychosis, some really innovative non medical treatments, and theories and research on its cause were discussed

Sorry I missed it, can't access BBC player :-(

I remember a discussion/argument I had with a psychiatrist in the late 1980s, where I said people with psychosis seemed very unhappy to me, and omg the horrible experiences they'd had; he completely disagreed, said they were happy.

I said, maybe you just don't ask enough questions. :-) I think my intuitive answer is gaining traction these days and in the last 10 years.

You should try access it, I really enjoyed it! Some points from it

Dopamine has a fairly large part to play in symptoms, in so far as it effects how the environment is scanned for danger!

Trauma in childhood plays a huge roll

A recent study shows a correlation between moving around, changing schools etc as playing a part in mental health difficulties

The voices in psychosis are thought to be heard as external voices due to some interaction with dopamine!

Really interesting the programme followed 3 people, two off who stopped medication with talking therapy, the key to this was to engage with their voices in a positive and friendly manner! Generally it was suggested that the voices, even the more sinister ones, where an attempt the warn of possible dangers, generally linked to past trauma.

New apps and computer generated therapy to help people confront the voices and put a face to them.

    Excellent programme

Missed it due to lack of tv and no chance on the player living in Ireland. Perhaps it will make it's way online at some point. Afaik Jacqui Dillon was on it who has some great talks to youtube about her own experience and the hearing voices network. Was there a mention of internal vrs external voices?
On a related note anyone here going to the iimhn conference in two weeks? Launch of a paper on trauma informed care and interesting speakers.

Yes, if I recall correctly, the externalisation of the voices is in some way linked to dopamine. Research is at an early stage however.

Really good how the voices are now used in a helpful manner, .i.e you have forgot your car keys, you're late for appointments etc. Fascinating stuff

Yes, one video I saw Jacqui said one voice helped in her exams. Wasn't sure if it was considered cheating or not.

Was there any talk of how voices are "handled" in different cultures? As in some places you may be considered especially gifted, Shamen, religions. Just curious.

Great documentary, I know somebody that has hallucinated their whole life. At first this was terrifying but they now embrace it as its comforting as the hallucinations are of a dead relative

Haven't seen the Horizon piece yet.

Just watched When The Bough Breaks on Netflix, well worth checking out. Wasn't particularly browsing for this, just looking under documentaries. It's about post-partum depression and psychosis. Starts off fairly typically in one sense, lots of talking heads, but doesn't feel very professionally made. That's perhaps to its credit - does improve on that aspect. Really gets into the heart of the issue after a while. A lot needs to be done in terms of screening and support. Must be horrible to live with, including wanting to harm your child.
