    Hi chaps,

Saw a van yesterday, looked just like a speed camera van but painted red with no markings on it at all, is it for speeding or something else?

I would like to add that I wasn't speeding at all (about 20kmh under) just wondering.

    Thanks,

    M.

If it had a camera it could be for a traffic survey, ANPR or a Garda speed detection van. Go Safe vans have the high-viz applied, Garda or traffic survey ones are often plain - and can have forward facing cameras too.

My lord this is complete half baked nonsense.

Correct. GoSafe conduct traffic surveys in areas that will likely see a new zone introduced. The vans come in all colors, generally Renaults or Fords with KY or KK regs.
    ANPR

Currently not conducted by GoSafe or the Gardai.
    Garda speed detection van

Nigh all Garda vans, marked or unmarked, are white Ford transits.

Not in Ireland. All speed detection equipment in Ireland is rear facing only, targeting vehicles approaching or departing away from the rear doors only. Any other cameras on the van are for CCTV only.

I am aware of at least one instance of an unmarked speed detection van using a forward facing speed camera.

They have (or at least had - not sure if still in the fleet) at least one green and one red transit also.

And one grey van with a speed camera facing out through the front windscreen.

None of them have forward facing cameras, however a small few have forward facing CCTV cameras.

I passed a go safe van coming out of Youghal last week.
It had no hi Vis or the usual camera decal.
It did have a sticker on the side saying van had someone inside.
I slowed right down for a good look of it and there was a camera facing out the back and seemingly nothing facing out the front.
It was parked where there is normally a hi Vis one parked.
Are they allowed have no markings?

Answered a billion times in various threads here.

Its a survey van. They are used to monitor traffic, likely a zone that will become a GoSafe zone in the future. They don't issue fines.
