    Hi guys,

With the summer weather finally here I'm sure you are all dying to get out on the golf course as much as I am! :D Well now's your chance to participate in the next Boards Golf Society outing at New Forest on Saturday 20th of May.

Thanks very much to New Forest for coming to the rescue when Glen of the Downs sadly went by the wayside and a replacement venue was required.

Measuring 6,571 yards off the whites this Peter McEvoy designed course was played by us for the first time last year but sadly I was unable to make that day so I'm looking forward to seeing it this year. There is a course guide on the website http://www.newforest.ie/1st-hole-2/ so to save charlieIRL from having the curse of the course guide placed on him I am putting the link here instead! :D

We will be charging €35 for the golf (€40 for non-members) and there will of course be a 2s competition as well. As the race for Ryder Jug places/GOTY hots up come along and add to your points tally.

The teamer invites have already been issued and I know many people have already responded but for those that haven't please let me know of your availability. The first tee-time is at 13.10 and the last is at 14.00 so if there are requests for early/late tee-times let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate you.

    Yours in golf,

    ballyk

I may struggle to get to this outing as it clashes with the Pierce Purcell Shield Group Qualifying at Ashbourne GC which I possibly will be involved in. I will confirm nearer the time if I can attend.

I'm in - can I get an early time please captain?

    Late start for me please

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,047 ✭✭✭paulos53

If we are starting at 12:10 then a late teetime for me please.

If the first teetime is 13:10 (as posted on Teamer and MyGolfSociety) then any teetime is fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭ballyk

    Well spotted!

First tee-time is at 13:10. I've edited the thread and first post now, thanks.

On the opposite end of the scale lads I broke 30 points for the first time last weekend and had 24 points for a 12 hole comp on Tuesday night:)finally seeing some results......

nice one post. yourself and Kieran. are improving streadily. will be in the prizes soon no doubt.

regards myself, had been playing very well but think I'm golfed out now. played my first qualifying comp of the year the other day (back in portarlington) and got 29. just been playing lots of matchplay, foresomes, fourball, etc, had been dying for a singles to get a cut in but it was like I was just tired of the game with lazy swinging.

A week to get ready for New Forest, but I won't hold out much hope as it will be my first visit to the place

Lads does anyone have a course guide from last year?

I heard there are a lot of blind drives that ended in bad spots with the way the fairways turned?

Lots of hidden danger, particularly for longer hitters off the Yellows. From what I remember 10th off the yellow tees was punishing. I hit 3wood too long and lost the ball. The 12th was also very punishing into the wind for us. I scratched both I think. Long par 4 even off the Yellows. There wasn't really a perfect way to play the 12th. Except perhaps play it as a par5.

Water on 13 was reachable for fix with 3wood (although he is a bit of a monster)

Also the 18th was recommended for longdrive and wasn't really suitable. I think 16 was later considered better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

18th was a terrible long drive hole from the yellow tee boxes alright. If you're off the white it would make a lot more sense, but even at that, its a relatively narrow fairway if I remember correctly.

I'm not going to make this one Captain, sorry, tee time a bit too late in the day to manage it that weekend.

    Best of luck everyone

18th is a slight dogleg right heading back towards the clubhouse.

I'm a member at New Forest so I can offer some advice:

    Long drive suggestions- 5th, 8th or 15th

Near Pin- 9th (recommended as it's short- only 110yds or so), 11th if you want more of a challenge and 16th if you to eliminate 90% of the field ;-)

1st hole- straightforward drive, big hitters will have only a wedge into the green. Green well guarded, bunkers on right, drop off into rough on left and a ditch behind the green (red stakes). Left side of fairway gives best angle in.

2nd- Deceptively tough par 3, trouble all down left, bit more room on the right, tough green to hit. Best miss is short.

3rd- almost driveable par 4 for the big hitters, plenty of space on the right but a hill will restrict view into green. Just left of bunker in centre of the fairway ideal spot.

4th-Index 1 long par 4. Need to be a big hitter to go for green in 2, green is small and really well protected. Ditch running in front of green bunker short and long. Bail out position is short right, still leaves a tricky 3rd into green. Take a 5 and be happy!

5th- Easy par 5. Straightforward drive, going for it in two only feasable for long hitters, must be on right side of fairway or the big tree will block line. Lake short right, stream in front. Lay up is 40-50 yards past big tree on right. Easy enough wedge in from there.

6th- Tough par 5. Consider laying up off the tee, trouble everywhere. most should be in or around the 150 for the third shot. Elevated green.

7th- Tough par 4- deep rough/hazard all way down right. Going left is fine but really long, and probably blind approach if you go too far left. Short hitters aim for bunker, if longer go right of it. Be aware of a ditch short of green, you may not see it from where you hit your second.

8th- Straightforward drive, left side opens up approach a bit better. Tiered green makes putt tough if on the wrong level. Par-able hole.

9th- Beautiful par 3 inside walled garden. Only 100-odd yards, horrible pot bunker and wall at the back of green to be avoided.

10th- Blind tee shot- wait to hear the bell!! Big hitters can't hit driver off the yellows. This is the only hole on the course that crosses the entrance road. OOB left. Aim just right of the three ash trees on the top of the hill. Tough and long second shot to well guarded green, another one where a bogey is fine.

11th- Normally a 200-yard par 3 but off the yellows it's only 160 or so. Two dead trees on right often catch only slightly mis-hit shots. Drain and other trouble off to left.

12th- A real strategy hole. It has a very contentious large tree in the middle of the fairway. Drives straight down middle can be blocked out. Extremely easy to scratch as there is trouble everywhere. Drain up left side all the way to the tree. OOB on right. Lay up short of the tree, 8 or 9-iron over the left side of the tree leaving 40-50 yards into green would be my recommendation.

13th- Short par 4, stay left of big tree. Longer drivers off yellows need to consider lake at front of green. Gorgeous second shot in, green area wouldn't be out of place in Augusta! Very tricky and slopey green.

14th- Trouble short and right of green, longer hitters can't hit driver off tee. Try to get as close to the trouble at the end of the fairway as you dare, being 150 or more into the green is a terrifying task! Be accurate with your second!

15th- Long uphill par 5, high index is deceiving as third shot into green is tough. Three tiered green so choose approach club wisely.

16th- Really tough par 3- 200+ off the whites/blues and into wind most of the time. Yellows should be more forward. Deep bunkers short left and right. Huge green but not a flat section to be seen. A par is an excellent result.

17th- Index 18 par 5, but again green is well guarded. There is a hollow on the right that tends to gather drives. Longer hitters will clear it off the yellows. Short left is best for approach into green. Green slopes down to left and difficult to hold if hitting full shot in. Trouble left and right of green.

18th- Dog left left to right. Drive line is just over left-most tree on the right side of fairway. Two bunkers off left side, watch out for hitting over them, lots of heavy rough behind them.

It's a tough course. In good condition right now. Today's rain will do the greens no harm either. Enjoy folks!

Just to confirm I won't be able to make this outing as it clashes with the Pierce Purcell Qualifiers which I'm playing for my club out at Ashbourne that morning. Best of luck to everyone and enjoy the day. New Forest is a lovely course and hopefully I will see you at the next outing.

So who's feeling confident about tomorrow? Anyone going to go out on a limb and predict a victory for themselves?

With only 6 of the top 10 in GOTY playing tomorrow there could be big changes in the standings come tomorrow night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Well I've never played it before, so not me! lol.

Have had a week away from the sticks, but swinging tonight in a 9 hole scramble so some relaxing practice to warm up for tomorrow. weather looks like we might see a shower or 2, but nothing to serious

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,175 ✭✭✭kieran.

I played there once buoyed with confidence after a nett 65 in stoke play the previous day, I left with 22 points and alot less balls....confident I am not :pac:

Will be happy to get around with the least amount of carnage. Looking forward to seeing the garden hole.
The weather forecast has improved a lot from previous days.

The garden hole is unique. Nearest the pin for sure.

Word on the street is that Seve had lessons which were very productive and Bigchap found something in his swing recently. So all three of us in group one have something new to bring to the course (a new shirt for me).

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict the winner tomorrow will come from group one

Tomorrow will be my 9th game since Saturday. You would think all of that play would lead to an improvement but instead my swing has gotten worse over the week
I may need to get a few golfballs off Charlie before the round is out :P

I've decided that Nearest the Pin will be on 9 and Longest Drive will be on 15. Hopefully we will be playing off the whites as long as the weather is ok.

I'm after using all my luck tonight. Played with 3 strangers, 9 hole scramble, we were -6 gross, would be shocked if we don't win.

Just home from a club classic myself, pissing rain for most of the evening!! So tomorrow will be my third game this week and I had a lesson another night aswell!! I'm aiming for tied 15th with Charlie :)

Quick heads-up lads that we may have to defer tomorrow's prize giving to another day. My car won't start so I'm dependent on the kindness of others to get there tomorrow and as a result am likely to have to leave after the golf. Apologies in advance.
