Eir broadband v Virgin broadband

Hi there

Currently have sky broadband but looking to switch thinking if eir or broadband just looking to see if anyone would recommend one over the other etc need broadband especially for working at home, Netflix, etc

There are 2 main factors:
What sort of speed can you get with Eir Fibre from your location vs 240 /360 megs from Virgin. With Eir fibre you can get anywhere from 7 megs to 100 megs depending on how far you are from a cabinet. If FTTH is available by Eir in your area then you can get 150, 300 or 1000 megs. Check what type of fibre and what speeds you can get from here

The second main factor is download data per month. Virgin Media is truly unlimited with no usage caps. All Eir fibre packages are strictly 1 tb per month data allowance. The website says unlimited but this isn't true.

Hi Gonzo, thanks for the info here. Do you know if Eir apply download restrictions in relation to come to? Ive always used UPC / Virgin but I do down load using Utorrent so I'm just wondering if Eir block this service? Thanks

I am not 100% sure on the use of torrents but a good few of the torrent websites would be blocked.

OK thanks Gonzo. I'm just wondering, do you have Eir yourself? Could you comment on the speed quality of their broadband service? I've checked the website and it says that they supply my estate in Kilcock with speeds of up to 90mb so I'm just trying to get some feedback on whether the service is comparable to Virgins fibre offering? Thanks for you help.

sounds like Eir's eFibre which is Fibre to the Cabinet is available to you. Your estate may have up to 90megs but depending on the size of the estate and the line distance between your house and the cabinet, your speeds could be higher or lower.

I have FTTH which is a completely different service to Eir's standard fibre service. With FTTH the speeds are guaranteed the two different fibre services are not alike. Your speeds should be stable and fast enough if your within 500 meters of the cabinet.

Yes they do. And their usage checker is no use as it runs from month to month rather than from bill cycle to bill cycle.

Virgin all the way for me.

Eir have a fair usage policy that they actively charge customers over usage, even though they advertise unlimited. I've had no such issues with Virgin or UPC their predecessors.

I was a former customer of Eircom back in the day, and had to use them again for a brief period about 5 years back, and I wouldn't recommend them to my worse enemy.

Virgin can have their odd accounting mishaps, but I'm yet to have an issue resolved to satisfaction. And the broadband, the critical thing to me, is incredible and reliant. I think I've had probably one segment of downtime I can remember in years. And even then the issues tend to be DNS related, so I just drop in Google DNS and I'm back going. Might be lucky with the areas I've been in.

If you can get Virgin in your area, it's pretty much the only thing to get imo.

@TheDoc...that's absolutely what I thought but having always been with Virgin / UPC I wanted to get some feedback of the Eir offering. Will 100% be going with viegin now. Thanks for the advice....

if Virgin is in the area, then they are the obvious choice.

FTTH style speeds, properly unlimited, no watching the clock and cheaper.

I will never have Virgin Media where I live, unless they ever plan to resell Eir's FTTH and offer unlimited, now that would be great.

To be fair you'd want to be an extreme user to hit their usage cap, but it's still there

No bother in this house:pac: I'm with VM since last October and have smashed the 1TB barrier in all but the first month, great service I love it.(no problem getting to the streaming/torrent sites either;) )

Anyone know can you get Virgin Broadband through Fibre to the Home or it it only via SIRO? Looking to get away from eir

Virgin use their own network which isn’t shared with anyone else either through FTTH or Siro
