I have a cold area in my house Hall stairs and Landing. I only really put on heating to heat this area as other rooms are heated by multi fuel stoves. I was wondering about getting an electric heater Joule Therm I was quoted around €400 for one and 8.5 cent an hour to run, It seems a cheap option to have it running for maybe 3 hours in the evening to boost the heat in the hall the rad they recommended was the Joule Therm JT12r. My wife thinks a cheap oil filled rad will do the same job???

There has been loads of discussion on heaters over the years here.
This will not give you heat any cheaper that an old 1 or 2 bar electric heater. No electric heater will. If you were to run a two bar electric heater at a cost of 8.5 cent per hour, you would get exactly the same amount of heat as you would from your proposed purchase.

The difference between the two will be, thermostatic control, timer, perhaps a built-in fan and aesthetics. For my money, I would consider an oil-filled electric rad with temperature control and timer the best option...aesthetics aside.
