I'm sorry, I am not sure of your point?

What is it I need? I belive it's called a saorview box?
Is this Irish channels only? Or is it UK also?

I am looking for a setup/whatever I need to get all the UK channels.

Oh without a satellite dish - I cannot install one of these.

Oh and would prefer a one off fee rather than a subscription

    Is this possible at all?

    .

the term "dodgy box" infers it is inherently illegal.

Dodgy box is code for illegal streaming/reception, and nothing you want is achievable with your set up.

Saorview boxes can be bought in Power City.

Pretty much all TVs sold in Ireland for years have the required tuner for Saorview so you won't need a box. You will need a connection to Ann aerial though.

The aerial for saorview isn't very big.

OK heading home soon. Will see if I have an aerial in the house.

It's a relatively new TV you think I can just tune in saorview??
Will I get bbc and c4???

You will need an aeriel and a soarview box or soarview tv to get the full irish channels.
For the free uk channels you will need a satelite dish and free to air box or combi box.
If you have good wifi you could try an android box and get tv that way.

Think my wifi will be ok

What is an android box and where do I get one?!

I rang Vodafone and I can add tv to my broadband but will need to sign up to an 18 month package which I don't want. I am renting, don't know where I will be in 6 months, mightn't even be in this country sure!

As has been said you can get tv through an android box, the box connects to a card sharing scheme. Although the boxes are not illegal, some of the uses are, eg, viewing some tv channels without a subscription. Android boxes can bought on the Internet.

Value for money the internet would be the best place to buy an Android box But they can also be bought in the likes of d.i.d and powercity, i've linked an example of a couple below. First box is only €89.99 but only has 1GB of RAM. 2nd box is far better but it €179.99.

First off edit the title and remove the words dodgy box.

In these fora, they mean cardsharing boxes that bypass Sky's subscription system. Its a no no here and the mod will lock the thread.

If you want the Free UK channels (BBC1, Ch4 ITV etc) you will need a satellite dish.

Your TV may have a satellite tuner in it check the back. It will be labelled SAT and have a screw on type connector. Most of the LG TVs have it built in. If your Tv doesnt have that, then you will need a satellite box too.

You say you are getting 5 Irish channels so presumably you have an aerial connected to the TV. This is Saorview (theyre are more than 5 by the way). Saorview only has the Irish Channels.

Either way the only way to get the UK channels is via satellite. Theyre are many ways to hide a satellite dish. Is this an apartment or a house ?

Filmon.com also has the UK TV channels via the internet.

Lads you don't need a satellite dish to recieve uk channels depending on where you live. In large areas of the Republic you can recieve the UHF spillover from the North or even Wales using the Freeview system. Where do you live OP ?

Edit - alternatively the filmon app and a Chromecast. Picture quality not great though.

I have basic virgin broadband and no tv package with them. I still get analogue tv into the house on the same cable, and it goes to all the rooms which were wired by UPC previously. I get the first list of channels shown below.

There is nothing dodgy about this, virgin are fully aware people have these. When they came to put in broadband they assured me they would not take out my TV cables. They did say it is not supported and not a guaranteed service and that it could go in the future.

    Large areas ?

A small minority along the border or those in high positioned coastal areas with large aerials along the east coast maybe. Thats not a large number desbrook.

In this day and age with large size TVs and HD and 4K I would not find it acceptable to use old analog signal as the picture quality is dreadful.

Adding a NowTV box to your set up might be worth considering.

While it's also a Sky offering, no dish is required and there's the option of daily / monthly passes for occasional sports and movies as I understand it (along with entertainment, kids and so on).

Do a bit of research, as it seems to be a lot cheaper if you source it via the UK, rather than the new more expensive offering in Ireland.

    Thanks,

    G.

I missed this thread somehow but lest someone ressurects it, the title of the thread is to be read as if the words "or dodgy box" were not there and there is to be no further discussion of same
