Getting out of the charity sector

I have been in the charity sector as senior management for some years now and it's not for me. I came from a private sector managerial background and would like to return to it (the feel good factor from charity work is not all it's cracked up to be). However I find recruiters review my CV and what I do now with a large national charity as if it's not a 'real' job if that makes sense? They then say they have nothing suitable and I should try for a role in the charity sector when I'm desperate to get out of it.

I work in operations/business development (not a fundraiser!) and the roles I've held in the private sector would have had similar titles and responsibilities, just in a different environment. I read all the time about execs moving from the private sector into the charity sector but never about people doing it the other way around. My experience in private industry far outweighs that in the charity sector.

Am I stuck here forever? Any tips on how to break back into things?

Look at your CV critically to make sure it outs your skills across well to start with. Secondly, apply directly rather than through recruiters, or via LinkedIn. Needless to say, a very well structured LinkedIn profile is a must.

If at all possible maybe try consulting gigs in the private sector alongside. It would be something to add to your CV and potentially help get you back into a private company.
I am not sure if totally legit in Ireland but I know of acquaintances that officially run one-man-show consulting firms on their CV to fill the gap, though they likely do a lot fewer projects than they would admit to.
