First car service

    Hiya guys,

So my car (Volkswagon Golf TDi 1.6) is due its 15k service. It's the first service I will have done for it as I bought it last August- 61k when bought and service due at 77k.

I basically have a few questions.

Am I entitled to a free first service or is that dependent on the individual dealership's policies? I've been quoted €150-€180 on the phone.

Also, would I be better off getting it serviced "properly" at a big garage/dealership shop and fork over the €180 or would my local regular garage do the job?

    Thanks! :D

I'd get it done at the dealer for the sake of the warranty and the possibility that you'll have repairs needed in the future that you might want goodwill on.

There wouldn't be any free services included with a car unless it's one that's already been done.

If the 60k service was done correctly, it's only due an oil and filter change at 75k.

    If it's 141 or newer that'll be €169 at a VW dealer, if it's older than 141 it'll be €159.

No harm to do it at the dealers as above to maintain your warranty and VW give you AA membership with every service which is nice.

    Why is a 141 €10 cheaper?

To incentivise keeping "older" out of manufacturer warranty cars in the dealer network i'd say, I know it's only a tenner but every little helps!

It may not seems amazing on a Polo or Golf but to pull up and get a lube service in a bigger car Passat or even a Touareg for that kind of money isn't too bad.

What do you get for your €160? Still seems a good bit for an oil change and visuals, or is there more to it?

You get a main dealer stamp Colm :pac:

Dress it up how you want but it is an oil and filter, you get a wash and vac and 12 months AA membership which both probably have some small monetary value. Other than that it's just your 150 point check, software updates but that's all fluff really.

The €10 extra charge because the car is newer is comical, but hey those glass palaces and cringey YouTube ads don't pay for themselves!

I got charged €5 for a car wash in the Toyota garage last week. I never asked them to wash it. It was in on getting atf changed.

There is no way I would have given them 1 cent towards the car wash.

I got charged for a car wash and windscreen cleaner fluid once at a Toyota main dealers, I pointed out that I didn't ask for either so I wasn't paying for either, they didn't mind taking the cost off.

    I actually didn't buy it at a VW dealership so I guess I'll be forking out 180 beans. And it's a 131.

They sure know how to make their money anyways!

    €159, not €180.

It's due it's first engine air filter at 60k and it's first fuel filter at 90k. You are right in between the two so I'd make sure the air filter was changed last time otherwise get it done now. Same with the fuel filter, maybe consider doing it now as it will be slightly overdue at your next service. Neither are terribly expensive as an add on.

The Cruiser I dropped in was covered in cow **** in fairness, they actually washed it well.

No massive need to go to the dealer if you're not on a dealer warranty. The point about goodwill against things like EGR valve remains though, does the car have a full VW service history so far?
