Tyre recommendation [Lucan area]

Time to replace all tyres on a passat cc. They have 235/40/R18 Contisport contact 5 on at the minute but I don't think I can afford those looking at online prices. I am looking for a decent alternative brand if anyone has any recommendations? My budget would be around ?400.

I am open to online but would probably prefer a tyre place. I am based in Lucan. I am going to call into a local tyre place this evening to see what they recommend.

I cannot help you with a tyre fitter recommendation but having had a CC with that size tyres I can tell you that you'll struggle to get a decent brand tyre + fitting locally for ?100 a corner. That size is not overly common so they are a bit pricey.

These are a good mid range tyre @ €93 a corner before fitting and balancing:

Maybe the OP doesn't realise how expensive they are. Bit of a leap to say they can't afford something.

OP states he can't afford them looking at online prices, where they're going to be cheaper than a bricks and mortar place.

Bit of a leap to jump on my comment when in reality it was tongue in cheek.

You should be able to get Linglongs, Aotelis, or Shandongs for around or under your €400 including fitting if you check around a few fitters local to you to see which does them. All should do a good job for you.

You're as predictable as the rain. You really need to try harder.

OK I had a few mm left with my first post but now its definitely time to change. I got some quotes for those Kumho....one was €140 fitted the other was €125. Other tyres offered at €125 were Pirelli GT Nero, Uniroyal Rainsport 3 and Falken 510.

I found a garage that will fit tyres at €10 a corner so was looking at online sales also. Has anyone every ordered off https://www.tyres-pneus-online.ie ? They seem slightly cheaper than openeo.

A friend at work has the same car as went to a tyre fitters and they gave him a set of these for €280 fitted

From reading other threads I see there is a split of opinion on cheaper tyres. He says they have been fine and hasn't had a problem. He does a lot of driving Dublin to Mayo every week. Can't find many reviews about his tyres though but have found something similar in these maybe :

How accurate are those EU labels to go by ?

He says they have been fine and hasn't had a problem. He does a lot of driving Dublin to Mayo every week.

I am obsessed about importance of buying good tyres and had this discussion with my co-workers many times.

Most of the them thinks that any tyre is grand until they found their way to the ditch. Then it was car's or tyre's or road's fault causing that accident not their choice of tyre and its limits.

I even had a friend who bought 4 brand new tyres for his Passat for 220 Euro and when I checked them they were 5 years old budget tyres. I warned him to be careful about the limits of those tyres and he laughed at me.

4 weeks forward, he came to me saying that he had to replace all of them because car started to slide when 5 people in the car during a hard breaking on a down hill and they had a moment.

Good tyres don't necessarily mean most expensive ones.

This is the cheapest one I would go for if budget is a constraint.

This is what I am trying to figure out but when I see the sheer amount of brands available I find it hard to filter. Even well known brands when you look at reviews don't seem to be great. You are just paying for the name on the side I guess in those cases. Obviously then there is very good tyres amongst those leading brands.

Those ones you linked seem to be very cheap compared to the same ones on other sites?

Rubbish, rubbish and rubbish tyres there.

Tyre labeling is done by the tyre manufacturers themselves and they just need to meet a minimum standard, still doesn't mean they perform well.

I hate these threads as the end up making the OP more confused then when he began it. You will get so so many different opinions on here itll make your head spin.
My advice is go with what your budget can spread too, no point in asking for the best tyre if you cant afford it. Dont get too hung up what he/she or they said. Go to http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/ and look up the tyres you can afford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yes, but there has to be a minimum standard that you would go to. If your budget only gets you Triangles, you need to change the budget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,358 ✭✭✭jimbis

if your budget is triangles then there is still better tyres out there that wont put you into a roundabout, but for similar price.
My previous post may read different to how i intended it too. Thing im trying to say is you can have all the recommendations from everyone here and still be none the wiser. For example ive had several friends who are very much car knowledgeable that swear by landsail tyres as a great budget tyre, but someone on here said they are rubbish.... Everyones opinion is different so for the op i recommend using tyre review, pick out 3 of the best tyres you can afford and then maybe come back here for advice on those 3. You'll be here till christmas other wise ;)

OK I am going to settle on either the Kumho KU39 as recommended on this thread by Bazz or Uniroyal Rainsport 3 (about €40 dearer). Any opinions as to which ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Have a look at the reviews of both tyres on http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/ then decide.
