New Ford Focus RS questions

Got a quote for a new focus RS from Ford Spirit Motors Dublin today.

    Something like €58,000 total cost.
36 month term, 592 per month.
    18,500 deposit / similar GMFV
6.9% APR equals about 5.5k cost of finance.

How would you even insure it... Very hard to get a quote even if you out in 30yo with max no claims its like 2k.

    Never mind an under 25

Financing it seems pretty costly though, especially for a base model.

A couple of years yet most likely, given Ford's previous timelines. Ford Ireland's pricing and finance options are a joke when compared to what the bigger 'banks' (VW bank mainly) can offer and as such the RS is priced out of the market for a lot of people. I'd personally love one, but there's no way I'm paying 60k+ for one to get the features that come standard on a lot of cars in a similar bracket these days.

Insuring it isn't really a problem and will not be the largest cost outlay you will come across. As you have shown, the interest on the finance will cost more over the 3 years than insuring it will cost most people in the market for one for 5-8 years.

If you're seriously looking for one, then I'd wait a year or two and then bring one in from the UK (Brexit repercussions depending), even though the residuals on them are always high, this model will probably not quite be like the previous ones, due to the global platform and availability of it. So you should get a decent deal in going that way and definitely save over paying what would approach €70k for one spec'd up properly over 3 year with interest and delivery etc...

Edit: Just did a quick Insurance cover test with AXA (not known to be the cheapest) - €1,278.41 fully comp. High enough but not too bad in the current environment.

58 grand is a hell of a lot of money for one. In saying that if you can manage it, do it.

Why not try pick up a 2016 model from UK for 30,000 sterling which is about 34000 Euro. I tried to get the VRT rate online but the model is not listed but surely it would add up to be less than the 60K price you are currently at?

Did you end up buying the RS?

Finance, insurance, tax, running costs. It is an incredible car but when you see the prices abroad in the US/UK it is very hard to justify paying 60k for it.

I have a window of time available this summer where I could pick one up in the UK for approx £30K which is approx 34K Euro. The problem is that I don't know how much the VRT will be as it is not listed on the website. Have you any idea. I really like them.

I am a bit worried though that it might be a magnet for theft. Finally, the 2.3 Mustang is on my mind. Hard to know.

Sounds like you can't afford the car, don't forget the cost of maintenance, tyres and so on. I'd say it would cost 3-4K per year before fuel to keep one on the road.

It's not that I can't afford it, I'll put it this way - if I moved to the US or UK to work in the exact same industry I would be able to comfortably pay for it. It just doesn't make much sense to put one on the road yet, maybe a bit down farther down the line.

The VRT I'd guess to be 25%. No idea why it doesn't show up on their website. I'm sure one of the many more knowledgeable people might be along to help though.

How would the Focus RS compare with an Audi RS3? Both 4wd and 5 cylinder engines. Similar price I imagine.

    Focus RS has a 2.3l 4 cylinder engine I think. Previous model had a 2.5l 5 pot.

Price is a killer here. It's actually cheaper than a Golf R in the UK, but considerably more expensive than one here.

Down to VRT and VAT presumably?
