I'm going to have the exterior of my house painted with Dulux Weathershield and keeping the same colour. Its 5 years since it was last painted and its not in that bad a condition some paint chipped to the back of the house.

My question is the painter says i should get 2 coats on it to last 5-6 years as 1 coat will only last 3 years - has anyone any advise on this how many coats are best?

2 coats is always best. 1 is a waste of time. Colourtrend is far better than Dulux Weathershield, but it is about a tenner dearer than Dulux, overall it might only be 30 quid extra for the whole house assuming you need say 3 buckets - well worth it in my opinion.

Also, it's advisable to paint the exterior every 4 years otherwise it could go into disrepair and will cost extra to fix.

2 coats actually offer protection to each other where one coat is just a stopgap.

If you have paint chipping off the wall then you're not even topping up the existing paint -its knackered and falling off the wall so it's not protect ting the wall. Listen to your painter. They're not trying to create work, they're trying to do the job properly which will look good but the main thing is that the paint protects the walls.

It's nearly impossible to remove paint from PVC.. Maybe repaint them properly?
