Our local council has changed our water connection from a stream off the mountain to a well due to problems with E.Coli in the water. There was no notice give only that a neighbour called to inform us. The water is currently being tested to find out its hardness. A water softener system will have the be installed to reduce problems with lime scale. Have any of ye systems in place at the moment for softening water and how do ye find them ??
We've talked to a few people we know who have systems in place but I'd like to find out a bit more information on the systems out there.

I had to install the Clack Low pH correction and Iron/manganese/lime filter in 2008. Cost me about €2000 afaik.

Made a huge difference as we had a lot of iron in our well which caused a lot of problems with showers and washing machines.

Goes through a drum of Cortex in just about 3 months and a bag of salt 2 months.
    Serviced every 2 years.

Not cheap to run with Cortex at €52 a drum & salt under a tenner a go but happy enough with it.

You don't have a huge problem with lime if a bag of salt is lasting you 2months!

Don't talk to me about iron. A nightmare with showers and washing machine as you say. Clack system installed here too.

I think drinking water isn't supposed to be treated with salt so a separate line from before the treatment section to the main drinking tap is fitted afaik?

A few people said that alright. There's a lot of different options and finding the one that suits best will take a bit of time. If the council gave us a months notice there'd be no problem
