I have a year long contract with Sky which expires at the end of the year. I have a sky dish but I think i'll go down the Cable route and sign up with Virgin Media. I know my sky dish wont work with VM but would a tv installation man be able to set me up with cable or would I have to go through VM directly? VM is avaliable in my area btw.

You will need to call Virgin Media who will then set you up.

Would they set me up without signing up for one of there services?

VM Set you up with cable internet and TV through their own cable.

    You can either have:

VM (via VM) Broadband, and keep the sky dish for freeview satellite (with I think wither the old box or a new one that you own)
Or VM Broadband and VM TV via the same VM cable (meaning the dish wont get used).

VM Will only set you up if you take one of their services. You dont get a 'freeview' service from VM and you cannot just get the cable and go for it (unlike with satellite broadcast tv, where you could get a tv installation man to throw up a dish and you can pick up whatever freeview channels there are)*

*Small caveat - there are around 15 or so analogue channels available on some parts of the VM network. If you take broadband only from VM and stick the tv part of the cable into your TV you should be able to tune them - but I dont think thats what you mean?

Are you looking for free to air tv, you won't get any type of service on cable without a subscription, unless you can access the analogue service and that the cable would still have to connected outside.
If you want fta stick with a dish with either a fta receiver or your Sky box out of contract. The dish will get you UK channels, you need an aerial and a Saorview tv or saorview box for the Irish channels.
