Undergraduate Work Experience

    Hi,
I am currently in the process of organising a 6-8 month work experience from January 2018. I will be in second year of an accredited psychology course and currently don't know what to do. What opportunities would be relevant to progression in this field? I am leaning towards clinical but realistically that could change for whatever reason. Most importantly though, is there any clinical experience that I could even apply for at this stage?

    Thank you,
    Owen Murphy

Are you looking/ hoping to get paid during the work experience? What are the requirements set out for it by the university? Your department might also have a database of where previous students have gone or you could chat to some lecturers for ideas.

I'm thinking that many places would be delighted to have a volunteer. I did this after my undergraduate degree in a day centre for adults with various intellectual difficulties.. they may not be able to take you 5 days a week but could you do 3 days in one place and 2 in another or something? Volunteering could involve supervision of activities, chatting to the people, but you might be able to help out in other ways - I helped to facilitate a drama therapy group for example. I got to chat to staff from many professions which was great and I found it really rewarding and I learned a lot.

Competition for any true clinical roles will be so tough from graduates building towards Clinical applications that I doubt you would get a look in to those. You could ask your department if there are any research assistant positions going - I do think this might also be unlikely while you're still an undergraduate but if you don't ask you don't get!

I wasn't aware that psychology undergrad degrees had practical work placements as a core part of the degree? What is the aim of the placement? I'm unsure what the linkage from theory to practice would be at this early stage of your development? research?

That said, something of a less clinical nature, such as a youth leader or in a observational role may be more suited to your present skill set? Drop in type centres may be the most likely place to secure a placement. Try the volunteering section on Activelink. http://www.activelink.ie/content/community-exchange/volunteering
