Forgot to mention, music is stored (and played from) a 64gb usb stick if that matters.

I'd start with a factory reset and see if there is an update for the unit

I'll try this out today, see how it goes. Thanks!

I wouldn't even go as far as a factory reset to start with... I'd start by clearing the cache for that particular app; if that doesn't work then remove the app & reinstall; from there I'd do a hard reset; and only do a factory reset if none of those work...

You should install HTC Boost... it's a very handy app for keeping things running smoothly.

Sorry for the late reply but I've finally got to reproduce the issue within certain parameters (reset didn't help, nor reinstall the app). It occurs solely when I try to have the app shuffle through all the files on the usb stick (represents something close to 60GB), when I limit the selection to an albums or an artist everything is fine.

It would tend to indicate that the app wasn't designed to handle that much files at once, or that there are some files in there that do not meet some requirements (some exif data not being readable by the app for instance).

When I get the chance I'll format the usb stick through the unit and copy files again on it, see how that goes.

Possibly it runs out of memory

Allot of electronic devices have difficulty with large capacity USB or SD Cards... try using a different brand, format to FAT 32... If that doesn't work, try a smaller capacity.
