Octavia alternative?

Looking to trade in my 2012 octavia for a 2015 octavia but can't seem to find many available in my budget with decent spec. Got my octavia valued at 9k to 9.5k by various skoda dealers and have 9k cash to spend so a budget around 18/19k. So many 90 bhp octavia's which I don't want. So any alternatives?

Do you need the same size interior/boot like the Octavia or could you get away with a slightly smaller car but still in the same class as the Octavia?

Like the boot size and the size of the octavia.I'm 6'2 so need a decent size car.

Of course if you could try and sell your own car privately then it would put you in a better financial position to buy the newer car.

Living near drogheda so all 3 are a good distance away from me and only the blue one in Cork would interest me colour wise.

Selling my car privately? Would many people spend 10k on a private sale with no warranty? Plus it would leave me with no car until I bought one myself. And I would possibly only make a grand compared to trade in.

So any other suggestions for something similar to an octavia within my budget?

Just asking but why are you changing.
i have a '12 octavia 1.6TSI with 220k approx and it's (touch wood) seems like new.

Engine size makes no difference to the amount of tax you pay. It's been like that since 2008...
It's the co2 you need to look at.
Buying a 1.6 diesel in a car as heavy as the octavia is silly important you'd need at least the 2.0

Sometimes you have to travel for the right deal. If your budget is dead set then those maybe the breaks otherwise you will have to compromise on either dropping back a year or upping the budget.

The Octavia probably offers the largest interior space in that class of car, most other stuff will be a bit smaller. I could recommend the likes of a VW Golf, Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 or Renault Megane/Fluence, etc but they would be tighter on the inside than the Octavia. Renault Megane or Fluence would offer the best value from that lot so might be worth test driving them and see if they fit.

why is it silly? Have a 1.6 octavia at the minute. It's not a rocket but it's fast enough for me and 1100km per fill.

Golf,focus,i30 all too small and wouldn't be a fan of Renault. What would a corolla be like size wise?

A Corolla ain't going to be any bigger than a Golf or Focus. Might be worth looking at the bigger Avensis. I'm not a fan of the current one but they may do the job for you and they are cheap enough on the used market.

Insurance is different for everyone so you would have to ask your current insurer. Motor tax is based on emissions since 2008, not engine size so cars of different engine size can be in the same tax band these days if they have similar Co2 figures. And a 2.0 litre engine can be more fuel efficient than a smaller engine if it's under less strain pushing a heavy body around. The smaller engine can need to work harder to do the same job so uses more fuel.

Depends, a bigger engine you may find could have identical or even better economy as the engine doesn't have to work as hard.
I'm not saying the tax for co2 on a 2.0 will be the same as as 1.6 as you need to see what the rates are for any car you find.
Insurance companies are the only ones that can answer if there will be a change.

A grand is a lot of money but I'd still have to hire a car until I bought one. Plus I could be waiting months to sell my car plus you have the hassle of selling with time wasters etc.

How can you say like that? Corolla is the best in that class. From the experience of my friends, what I can I say is that if you use a Corolla for 20 years, only think you have to do is change its tyres. Other than usual oil filter changes, there won,t be any other maintenance. I assure. For a skoda, after 10 years there might be some issues. Corolla is the most reliable and durable, all the Japanese ones.

Please read my post again. I never said the Corolla wasn't reliable and this thread is not about which one is more reliable. I said it wasn't any bigger than a Golf or Focus which are smaller on the inside that the Octavia. The OP needs another spacious car.

Had a look at Toyota Corolla and it's much bigger than the old model. Also longer than the Toyota Auris which is supposed to be the hatchback version. Have a look in the flesh as its larger than the focus and Golf.

Appears to be 4651mm long with a 2700mm wheelbase that's Octavia size. Pity the hatchback is so small.

Will look at the corolla when viewing an avensis. The dash on the corolla seems to stretch out to the passenger side.

I think you'd be mad going to a Corolla from an Octavia, sure it might have similar external dimensions not only do Toyota's not have the sterling reputation for reliability any more, they are dynamically not anywhere near to the Skoda. If i was in your position I'd simply wait a few month and get another Octavia - the 151 will drop a bit in value as we get close to the 172 reg change

I don't know, the 1.4 D4D in the Corolla seems a safer to me - it doesn't have a DMF to fail and EGR valves don't give much trouble either unlike the VAG 1.6 TDi in the Octavia. You also have to really tick the options list on an Octavia to get a decent spec, Skodas are no longer the bargains they once were.

Re the hyundai, they are pretty good car these days.
If I had to chose between that and the skoda I'd go for the hyundai.
