    Hello everyone,

I've just returned from a year abroad. I am looking to get a new car ASAP. I have a current car, which i took off the road before leaving. It is a 02 Corsa Opel 1 ltr, and it really is only now fit for scrapage.

    I viewed two cars today:
    1. 208 Peugeut - 2017. €16, 200k. 1.2 engine, with 5 year warranty

    2. Opel Corsa - 2017. €15,200, 1.4 engine (slightly cheaper because it was used alittle bit as a text drive car). 3 year warrenty and AA roadside for 2 years, taxed until Sept.

I would really appreciate some replies on which is the better option of the two cars..i may view more in the pipeline, but i reckon these are two strong contenders.

i know virtually nothing about cars and i would like to see this car last me for the next 5yrs plus! Both are petrol. I will be based a short distance from work and i won't be doing a large mileage over the year.

Any other car types/suggestions would be kindly appreciated. i would need to make a decision by early next week. Thanks

    Not a corsa.

    Look at the Hyundai i20

I had a 2013 Peugeot 208 1.2 Petrol and I must say that it's a brilliant little car and unfortunately, often overlooked. Very reliable car and the 5 year warranty gives some piece of mind regarding the quality of the build.

I averaged about 5,000km a year, so I can tell you that she is a good car for small spins and city driving.

Just one thing to consider is the small steering wheel, I loved it but I know it's not for everyone.

Thanks for your reply, but why do you suggest the Rio?

I would get away without filling her up for about a month to a month and half. I always wait until she's gone into the red and I can't recall it ever hitting €50 to fill her up from being pretty low on petrol.

I couldn't find any cons with the one I had. When I traded her in at the start of the year, I went for another Peugeot, I love their cars.

I had the Active model, which is the mid range model, and all the stuff that came as standard in her was amazing value. I know people with other car brands that would have to pay for optional extras to get a similar spec.

The way I see it, if you look after your car, she'll look after you.

The Corsa is ancient, it was launched 11 years ago with a nip and tuck 2 years ago. They are outclassed by their rivals in nearly every department these days. The only ones buying new Corsas now are car rental companies because they probably get them cheap.

If you've been abroad for a year with your car off the road you should check with insurance companies about the cost of a policy before buying any car

The Corsa is an antique at this stage. It was launched in 2006 - it wasn't exactly class leading back then, It has had a bit of a nip and tuck in the last few years, but it's a rental car special at this stage.

I like the i20 because it's got a good warranty, I think they look nice, they're well built and the dealer network is good,

Kia Rio is essentially the same car.

The brand new Seat Ibiza would be worth a look subject to price and availability ..

The latest Suzuki Swift is also worth considering. It comes with a new 1.2 litre petrol engine. The Swift has always been considered a well made, reliable and economical car which is good to drive.

Thank you, i actually viewed it today and it is a nice car, it is abit on the smaller side and the boot is soooo tiny! So i think i will have to pass on it.

Do you have any knowledge on the Hyundai i20??

Hyundai i20 and the Kia Rio are the same car underneath as Hyundai and Kia are sister companies. The Hyundai would have a better warranty being 5 years and unlimited mileage, the Kia would have a 7 year warranty but is limited to 150,000km. Only really an issue if you do big mileage though. Both cars would be safe bets and very reliable.

There was a new model i20 introduced late in 2016 whereas the new model Rio based on that i20 was only launched very recently. The Rio tends to be a little bit cheaper than the i20 too but you cannot go wrong with either.
