Prequels are a funny bird as it stands but I'm not sure how well it can work when there's such a demonstrable "end" to this story. An end thats really just a launchpad and contrivence for a more famous tale. Plus I dunno, no superpowers, no superman, not sure what the point is here or who it's aimed at...

Looks like the trailer was a leak, so has been pulled down where and when it pops up on YouTube & Twitter. Everyone always forgets Vimeo though haha:

    https://vimeo.com/213799000

Honestly, I'm not sure about this, it feels like it's reaching.

Yeah it was leaked. It also looks like its in the same universe as the DC Movies as the house of El emblem looks the same as the one in Superman movie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

I thought it looked a bit weak.. I dunno.. like a high school drama mixed with ok special effects.

I think the writers will make or break it.

This is basically exactly how I feel about all prequels. That said, this trailer, at least production-wise, looked quite strong. Hmm...

I dont think it'll be same universe, they've explicitly stated from the outset that none of the tv shows exist in the movie universe, that said, they've def borrowed some of the style of the last 2 superman movies for this series, emblem, blood etc

Well the writer of the pilot - and executive producer - is David S Goyer, so that might colour your/people's expectations.

Most certainly something to check out, maybe we get a leaked episode ;-)

20 seconds ain't much to go on, but I guess I'm curious as to what actual plot or story-arc is going to be; obviously it's unlikely to be relationship drama all the way to Krypton's destruction (spoilers? :D ), but there'd want to be something to keep ones interest in all those dead people walking.

With Goyer heavily involved I don't have high hopes.

The one thing that gives me hope is SyFy have been on a bit of a roll with their shows of late.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

OK so apparently the buzz coming from comic con is that the show will have a stronger and more unique connection to DC universe than first suspected:
it's its own continuity for one, and supposedly, Adam Strange and Hawkwoman will be present, having travelled back in time to ensure Kryptonian history takes place as it should, following a bunch of bad guys who have also gone back to mess with things.
    I wasn't expecting that.

It is an interesting concept that I've never read in any detail or learned about more, considering I like Superman and DC stuff bit weird on my self.

But when the planets top scientist (well frequently reference as such in various material) has been forcasting the end of the planet, does make an interesting concept as to why he wasn't heeded until it was too late etc.

Finding it very hard to give a shit about this. :)

Aside from being narratively utterly redundant, it looks like it's going to have a adolescently brooding vacuum where its sense of humour should be. If it's really going to be as super-serious as the promos have so far implied, it'll be a hard pass for me, barring something spectacular from critical / viewer feedback.

    Where will they go next?
    Smallville-Superman as a highschooler
    Gotham-Batman as a kid
    Krypton-Superman before he's born

    Superman the conception.

This is set two generations before Krypton goes boom. If it was two years, it might be more interesting.

    Just finished the first episode!

    Interesting premises for the series.

Romeo & Juliet type love story.

Time Travel and a New Super Villain (with similar looks to Star Wars)

Nice having Brainiac as the villain as well as the potential freak of the week as well, the whole "teenager is the key but didn't know until the end" is a bit cliche at this stage, I'm glad Mrs. Donovan didn't survive, I didn't like the whole cloak=timer thing but it's got potential and I think I'll stick with it a while, but I am a Superman nerd so it would take a lot for me not to watch it :D

Just realised this isn't a US thread so spoilered the above

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Mod note: as this show has now started, I think it's fair to put '** SPOILERS **' in the title and allow for some discussion. All the usual caveats apply for any show currently airing

    Guessing no
    daxam
then from what was said in that first episode.

I recognised the voice of the many headed mask guy who is listed as Brainiac on IMDB

    Not really enjoying this.

They must have as a small a budget as AoS as the seem to be using the same dark tunnels over and over again.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

So a few episodes in, have people been watching this? Keep meaning to at least give it a change despite the redundant-seeming premise, but certainly doesn't seem to be causing many waves, even amongst purists or fans. First candidate for cancellation?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,272 ✭✭✭EoinMcLovin

Really good twist during the latest episode and going by the trailer for the next few episodes things are going to get even crazier

Krypton Renewed for Season 2 at Syfy

Syfy is extending its stay on Krypton.

The cable net announced on Tuesday that it has renewed the Superman prequel series for Season 2, one day before its Season 1 finale (airing this Wednesday at 10/9c).

    Very surprised this was renewed.

Its one of the most Meh shows I’ve watched.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,863 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Being a Superman fan I persevered through all the episodes
The accents, especially of the lead, really really put me off the show.
But it does get better in the last few episodes and villian is good and the final episode - well something will seem familiar.
But the accents...ughhhh, only just found out it was actually filmed over here. Kinda show that makes you wanna put the subtitles on and turn the sound down!

Read somewhere this had ScyFy's biggest ratings for a TV show this year; don't have the numbers in front of me but that's nuts if true. Feels like it made zero splash compared with other franchises on the channel.

Took a punt on this, seeing it on All4 (albeit with expiry dates for episodes), and it's actually pretty OK. Main character wears a permanent "smelling a fart" face and is a bit of a generic teen pillock, but it's still a decent Kryptonian GoT-alike. Tells its own story without feeling entirely redundant as a Superman prequel. ...

I had been wondering if it would come to Netflix because I had not seen it listed on any channel (probably because I only use telly for the news:rolleyes:) but I would have checked it out on All4 (even with the ads) if I had known.

Any chance it might come to Netflix or Prime since Channel 4 has finished with it or will Channel 4/All4 be the only place to see it?

Looks like the FX work remains strong, I wonder if they'll still be using the same 4, 5 sets this time around; looks like there's a smidge of location work anyway.

Do we know if this is still shot in Northern Ireland?

Yeah it’s still shot in Belfast

Looks and sounds better, first season was a bit corny but enjoyable enough

Good first episode and it has also been announced that they are developing a Lobo spin off

Strong first episode of season 2, we'll see if the new sets get overused like last year, but the location shooting helped break the monotony. The FX remain extremely strong for such a "mid tier" show, with some greenscreen vistas quite striking. The dialogue was pretty awful, had forgotten David S Goyer was involved in this.

    Only real quibble how was glib they tied up a couple of loose ends;
particularly the uber threat of season 1, the near omnipotent Braniac, is literally beaten to death with a tree trunk - unless it's a fake out and Sig is hosting his consciousness

Wait until you see a certain bounty hunter

He's in the last 60 seconds, he certainly made an impression, and a comedic one that kicks against the otherwise straight laced show. The Irish accent, as they always are in American productions, is jarring though!

There is a crazy scene with him in an upcoming episode

Episode 2 and Lobo ... holy god. They inexplicably included Space Conor McGregor into this warmed-up Game of Krypton. The actor seems to be having a blast, and the others have the decency to look a bit confused and baffled, but ... blimey. What a decision.

Looks like they have a few more sets and locations for sure this season, which really helps the story breath and have some sense of scale. Hopefully it continues along those lines, and we don't end up endlessly running around the Rankless Sector.
