New resident - importing car

    Hi everybody

Apologies if this is not the correct location for this post (it's my first time here).

I'm just wondering if anybody can help me to clarify on VRT exemption and NCTs.

I'm looking to import my car (and myself :p), and have had it for 5 years in England, so I fit all the criteria for exemption. Does this mean I won't pay any VRT at all?

Also, I can see online that the plates can be purchased on VRT inspection - does this mean I can ask them to fit them there and then for me? And can I ask that the NCT is performed at the same time of VRT inspection?

Sorry for all the questions - it's not very clear when looking for info on this. If anybody can suggest tips to finding an insurance deal too, that would be much appreciated...

    Thanks in advance

Regarding the plates, they don't fit them for you, they just sell them to you for 25 euro.

They have adhesives on the back but to be on the safe side and to be sure that they don't detach as you are driving, you'll have drill two holes and screw them on yourself.

    Hi everybody
Does this mean I won't pay any VRT at all?
Yes, you won't pay VRT. However, for this to happen, you must first obtain a VRT exemption letter from your local revenue office. This is done by making an appointment with your local revenue office where you will need to prove that you meet the requirements for exemption. You can then present the VRT exemption letter to the NCTS/VRT office during the VRT inspection to have the VRT fee waived.
does this mean I can ask them to fit them there and then for me?
They wont fit the plates. Most motor factors or Halfords will also make up plates for the same price or less and you may find some might fit them for you.
And can I ask that the NCT is performed at the same time of VRT inspection?
No, the NCT can not be done at the same time. Once you have your new registration number, you need to book a NCT test separately.
If anybody can suggest tips to finding an insurance deal too, that would be much appreciated...
If you've been driving with your own policy in another country, then you'll probably want to use your No claims bonus or equivalent from England. When I went through this, I found online quote systems were useless and it was better to deal with brokers or directly by phone to get the NCB and previous driving experience recognised. Otherwise it's the same as for everyone else: spend a day ringing round all the insurance companies and compare quotes.
