Anyone know of any good value garages in the area to carry out a regular yearly full service? Just moved into the area so hoping for a bit of local knowledge to help me out!

I've been using Coolmine Motors for years. Sound bunch of lads who always do a good job and I've never left with the feeling that I'd been ripped off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 392 ✭✭Seanie_H

My advice would be to stay away from Atlas. Used them three times, car had to go back each time for them to finish the job properly.

I should've stopped after the first time but it's very convenient for us and I'm clearly lazy.

How much Zaph for a regular service roughly would you know?

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

I think it's usually around €130 for my Golf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,490 ✭✭✭amtc

Actually I've found Atlas good. But myself and my family generally use Aidan English down in Blanchardstown Village 820 5757. Good value and nice guy

Atlas is quoting 175 euro for a bog standard Kia...I'm looking for something less than that..what would Aidan be pricewise you reckon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,490 ✭✭✭amtc

My mam just paid 110 for Aidan for her Hyundai. I've in the past paid 90 for my Renault.

I use Philip Walsh in Dunsinea Works, always reliable.

I wouldn’t be going down the who’s cheapest road
More who does it properly and to the fullest, without shilling needless repairs onto you when you collect it.

Go to all recommendations or call and see what they do and don’t do.

I use Martin Talbot in Sheepmoor

I've used Fleming Garage up in Blanchardstown Business park. Always very happy with them.

I've been using Coolmine Motors for years and have recommended them to anyone who's asked.

They give you a rough estimate upfront where possible (pretty much every time in my case) and give you options ie. X for this Chinese tyre or Y for that European one, A for patching up an exhaust or B for fitting a new one.

True story: About a year ago, my car was making this horribe squeaking sound whenever I got down to around 5km/h, would also squeal quite a bit in the morning so I brought it up to Atlas just to price it.

They kept the car for an hour or two and then told me it was a handbrake issue and quoted me €350 to fix. I thanked them for their time and drove out.

The next week I brought it to Coolmine motors, handed them the keys and said let me know what the craic is. They gave me a call and told me car is ready, popped around and the following took place.

"Simple fix, just replaced the pin and it's all sorted"
    "So it's not squeaking?"
    "Nope, it's fine"
    "How much?"
"Free of charge, you can get me next time"

    Never going anywhere else.

Coolmine Motors are great for looking after their customers like that. I've been using them for years and they've fixed simple things for free for me a few times. At one point there was an issue with the car after they fixed something (not their fault, the part was faulty) and they came to the house, had a look, figured out what the issue was and managed to get it started so they could bring it to the garage. They didn't charge anything for that.

avoid ATLAS , the guy at the front desk is friendly and well intentioned but they haven't a clue about cars , bit like going to a lovely friendly doctor who can't make a diagnosis.

Discount Tyres in Rosemount is my usual car servicing place in D15.
Bit out of the way but they will bring you back into Blanch if you need a lift.

Know some of the guys working there, v good prices for tyres & tracking (with Hunter machine) too.

    Meh,
I rang them two years ago and asked how much do they charge for wheel alignment,€40 he said.Grand I said,be over in half an hour. They done the alignment and asked me for €55.Pointed out the fact I had rang them that very morning and I was told it was €40,and price was reduced.

    Never again.

I used to use Discount Tyres.

Had hassle, put it on a thread about servicing, employee from there is on boards so contacted me, discounted work and you guessed it more hassle in long term (whistling breaks as they used cheap parts).
Got a few services done in it (yearly ones), not once did they change coolant or even suggest it, makes you wonder what else they didn’t do.

Car passed NCT, few things needed checking, usual you need to spend hundreds, go to two other mechanics, spent about a hundred or so a tip wood car still going.

The best was I asked the main mechanic about a noise, come back hours later to collect car, I could not hear noise as window was closed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,879 ✭✭✭jeffk

Might as well give you all another story.

Coolant was a brown colour (between rust a mixed coolants), so I went to atlas in a panic as had a head gasket go in another car. Receptionist/mechanic says oh we are too busy come back in a few days and I wouldn’t be driving that car.

Then proceed to tell me the finglas branch was much quieter if you wanted to go over and get them to look at it.

Anyone know if Coolmine will fit parts for the car that you can get online etc? Atlas and these other jokers try charge ya an extra 40/50 quid for something you can get off Micks handy enough

Hi did you go ahead and get parts replaced with Coolmine? I got a good quote from them for replacing parts, but I'm hesitant to go with them as they won't email the quote, it's just verbal. Seems strange to me.

Yeah got my car serviced with them...they wouldn't be the emailing types.

Did a decent enough job but will be going elsewhere for the next one.

Ive been using coolmine motors since I moved to the area in 2012. Ive an old astra (13 years old now) and its sailed through the nct each time. Always felt I got value for money so Id have no problem recommending them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,888 ✭✭✭ozmo

I've used "P Walsh" in Scribblestown D15 a good few times - sourced parts for me at a better price than I could find them online and did a great job.

Just wanted to update as I was looking for advice last month. Thanks so much for all replies.

I ended up going to Global Service Centre just off the Ongar Road and I would highly recommend them. They did the job for a third of the original quote I received. I've since had a minor maintenance job done there too and it was completed in a few minutes while I waited and again a very fair price.

    Hi,

May I know, Which is good, Coolmine motors or Discount tyres to do a full service for my 2007 car?

Which service centre following manufacture's prescribed Oil and plugs?

    Thank You

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,879 ✭✭✭jeffk

I wouldn't use discount tyre's,others have said coolmine are good

I'm using Martin Talbot Motors myself.

Suppose you can ring either and see if they'll do what you want

    Hi,

    Thank You...

I saw your previous posts, you did use Discount Tyres before.
Was not happy with their service?

Martin Talbot Motors is too far for me as I'm living in Clonsilla & recently moved to this area.

I got quote from two places, 130 from Coolmine & 140 from discount tyres.
I'm preferring genuine guys, especially Irish guys :)

    Thank You

Well the guys in Coolmine Motors are Lithuanian, but tbh I can't see what difference that makes. They're genuine, honest guys who have always done a great job on our two cars. As regards a garage using the manufacturer's recommended oil and plugs, I'd say that the only way you could guarantee that is to use a main dealer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,879 ✭✭✭jeffk

As Zaph says re brand name oil etc, to me and ive been told by some mechanics. Its the same part just different stamp/packaging etc.

Plus I doubt any good mechanic will use the cheapest of the cheap oil etc, causing issues and losing customers.

I know herself has had two bad experiences with non Irish owned garages and the main "mechanic" in Discount was non Irish and to be short wast not good

If it's just a minor service bring it to a main dealer, I paid €140 from DG gowan on the navan road for a service and a 40 point check. My engine is 1.8 petrol.

    Hi,

I got a quote for full service = 130 euro

In Full servicing, following parts will change and around price for that (from google)

    1. Oil and Oil Filter = 35
    2. AirFilter = 50
    3. Spark Plugs = 40

Total 125, then they top up all fluids, health checks etc.

I'm wondering, what's their profit & how they find labour charge!!??

    Thank You

Hi, can anyone recommend a good place for ECU repair? I have seen a few online like Autotechnik Ireland, Auto Key and MACTRONIC but they dont have many ECU related reviews.

Unless you're looking specifically for somewhere in the Dublin 15 area you might have better luck over on the Motors forum.

    Try giving sportchip.ie a call.

They are based in D15 and Greg there is very knowledgable

Just throw another shout out to Coolmine motors. Full service on my Mazda 6 on Saturday €160. The lad I delt with couldn't have been nicer, not at all pushy, and they took it in on Saturday morning after me only calling them on the Friday so fair dues.

So thanks for the recommendations on here. I'd been looking for a local reasonably priced and decent mechanic for a while. Looks like I finally have one.

What exactly did they do for €160 euro though and what brand of oils and filters where used?

All the filters, oil change etc.

    A full service.

As for what brands I don't know. It's a 7 year old Mazda though not a high end Porsche so once they're doing the service I don't care if they're not using Mazda top end recommended oils etc.

Yet still important to know what was done in terms of a "full" service in terms of comparing.

    i.e.

    Oil change
    Oil filter
    Air Filter

    Cabin Filter
    Fuel Filter
    Spark Plugs (petrol vehicle)

    Labour charge

    Additionals:
    Coolant top-up
    Brake fluid top-up

I just did an intermediate service very quickly on my partners car this evening.

OIL (Liqui Moly Toptech, German Oil) €50
    OIL Filter: €10
    Air Filter: €24

    Total €84

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 81 ✭✭shinju

    Someone else above mentioned:

    2. AirFilter = 50
    3. Spark Plugs = 40

Air filters can be got from €8+ and Spark Plugs from €5 each at trade prices.

So they are probably more than doubling profits on some parts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 81 ✭✭shinju

Another thing I absolutely detest about garages is that they quote you a price, you agree, they do the work and when you go to pay they then slap on VAT.

So a €100 quote ends up being €123.

    Deplorable.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

To be fair, the points you've made above are probably true for every single non-main dealer garage in the country, not just in Dublin 15, so I think that discussion would probably be more suited to the Motors forum than here.

True. My point is that people are mentioning garages doing "full service" in the D15 area. They mention prices and how happy they are afterwards and recommend these places.

I live 5mins up the road from some of the places mentioned and would not be happy bringing my vehicles into them.

What exactly does the "full service" include though or is it a "full" oil service?

Can you point to a good guide or some hints on doing a mess-less oil change - its something I need do myself...
Its a very old mazda... I know 160/170 is the going rate - but it still seems very steep for an oil change to me.

I was thinking of getting one of those oil pumps rather than having get under the car...

Ok so you service your own car. I'm delighted for you. I salute your superior knowledge about cars. Bravo. Etc...

Now for the rest of the population who either can't or can't be assed (Im the latter) we go to a garage to get it done.

A main dealer charge a lot of money so i chose to get it done by a local non Mazda dealer first off save a few euro and two it was handy for me.

As for what was done on the car all of the normal service you mention was done and we also had a chat around other areas of the car that may need attention in the future, it being a 7 year old car. Nothing major and bits I know will need tending to in the coming year but no rush.

Anyway glad you were here to have start a pointless argument for no reason, I mean give your insight into the world of car servicing. I can sleep easy tonight knowing that you will make sure we all know what a car service is and we are stupid for getting it done by well anyone but ourselves.
