Which products do you use and when/how in your routine do you use them?

I am after ordering a few items but I am unsure what to use them. Bit of an impulsive purchase!!

I got the following and am on a mission to treat my skin!!

    Argireline Solution 10%
    Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
    Matrixyl 10% + HA
    100% Plant-Derived Squalane
    Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
    Alpha Lipoic Acid 5%
    Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
    Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2%
    Vitamin C Suspension 23%
    Niacinamide 10% + Zinc
    Advanced Retinoid 2%

I now just have to figure out the order I need to use them!

Thats a huge amount of actives. Have you used those %'s of active ingredients before? Do wear a highly protective SPF daily?

OP That's an awful lot of product, I'm not even sure what most of that is.

I would slowly introduce any new products to your skincare regime. It gives your skin a chance to get used to them and also if you do have a reaction at least you will know what product has caused it.

Sorry to hijack the thread but on topic with The Ordinary products.

For those that use them, how did you know what to get? Did you have skincare consultations that recommended similar products or are you very knowledgeable on skincare or did you just follow the regimes noted on the site?

I want to buy some products but not even sure where to start! My skincare regime or lack there of needs some structure and love at this stage

I kinda knew a little bit about skincare already and I read up a bit more plus there's lots of threads on here about it.
They do have suggested regimes on their site too.

If you want to put up some information about your skin type and current regime people are always happy to help :)

Right so please don't judge my lack of routine, we all have to start somewhere! I'm 30 with clear skin most of the time, can say I've never had more than 2 spots at once however dehydrated at present, light brown pigmentation under on sockets(where glasses would sit) and around lips - assume sun damage :( prone to black heads on nose and large pores between brows. Overall my skin just looks a bit dull. Have a small baby so I'll say some of that is down to lack of sleep :p

Have no real rouitne , have been using image vital C serum every morning and the vital C mask once a week overnight for the last month. These were gifted so maybe these aren't the best for my skin.
If no makeup just vital C in the morning after washing with any random wash and cleanse in the evening with a micellar water and that's it :0
If makeup on(3/7 days) micellar water, wash with a muslin cloth to remove more, botanics all bright cleansing cream and toner then the vital c on again.

Aim: rehydrate skin & minimise aging

So firstly thanks for reading and secondly what are you recommendations? With so many active ingredients I haven't a clue where to start!

Well for your aims - you need a good SPF (Look at La Roche Posay or Boots own Soltan brand). Those brown spots are more than likely skin damage but the ones around the lips could be hormonal as you mention you have a baby.

For rehydration - look at a good quality moisturiser (can be worn under your SPF in the day time), take a look at La Roche Posay, Avene, Vichy, Roc or Eucerin. For a cheaper alternative some of the Nivea ones are great - their night creams are great.

Avoid gimmicky products with fragrance and wild claims. Also increase your water intake - re hydrate from the inside.

The toner may be drying your skin out also - is there alcohol in it?

Just had a look and yep, alcohol might also explain the tightness in the skin post removing my makeup

I don't mind spending a bit, suppose maybe €200 or so now and the same every 3/4 months for tops up, change in products etc

Thats whats causing it - i would not use it.

No need to spend a lot - people spend huge amounts on skincare and its a waste unless the products are scientifically proven to be effective. The only things that have been shown to be effective are SPF for protecting the skin and Vit. A in the form of Retinol/Retinoids to resurface the skin.

Other things are helpful but not needed.

I'd second parchments suggestion to ditch the toner with alcohol, if it's making your skin tight it's not doing any good.
A very good toner is pixi glow tonic which has glycolic acid in it so it helps take the layer of dead skin and dirt away. It's quite strong so you need to ease into using it - 3 times a week for a fee weeks, then twice, then every day as long as your skin doesn't react.

Always, always wear an spf!!! There's hundreds to choose from. La Roche Posay have a great moisturiser with spf in it for so it does double duty. It is quite heavy but I think they do a light version too.
They also make a wonderful eye cream called toleriane ultra contour that will help with the circles around your eyes.

    From the ordinary I'd suggest-
Buffet- it's a serum of lovely goodies that will treat your skin. Wear under moisturiser.

Hyaluronic Acid 2% - you put this on after buffet has dried, it hydrates and repairs your skin.

Advanced Retinoid 2% - this will clear up your skin, slows down signs of aging and helps with skin tone.
It's quite strong so start off with once a week in the evening for a while then twice then 3 times, it is only to be used at night. If your skin reacts go back a step
Don't use other actives on the same evening (like the glycolic toner I mentioned earlier or your vit c stuff!)

Hope that wasn't too much info!!

Hi, hope nobody minds me jumping in here, I'm also curious about the ordinary products (and the more specialist skincare products in general, retinoids etc).
When you say it's quite strong and if your skin reacts, what are you talking about? How could something be too strong for your skin? I don't really know anything about these products so genuinely curious.

Some of the products have active ingredients that your skin needs time to get used to. Retinoid unclog pores and stimulates collagen renewal which helps us look younger, all of which is great but with overuse it can make your face dry, flaky and red. That's why I explained building up over time and stepping back if you start seeing ill effects.

It's the same with any products that include natural occurring acids (glycolic, hyaluronic etc) your skin needs a little time to adjust to them being part of the routine, once you adjust you'll see great results!.

Always wearing an spf is even more important when using these products because you don't have a build up of dead skin and dirt anymore.

Ah okay, I definitely need some pore unclogging help! I have problem pores around my mouth.
Thanks for explaining about the adjustment period.

I always wear an SPF anyway but was worried about ordering any of this stuff when I saw all the warnings to use an SPF, I thought they might be stripping the skin of something important.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions ladies, really appreciate it.

Am planning on purchasing the below over the weekend, how does it look all together? Am I missing something or is there some items not needed?

La Roche Posay moisturiser with SPF
The Ordinary Buffer, HA 2%, advanced retinoid 2%, Rose Hip Oil
    Pixi Glow Tonic

Need to get a good eye cream too so throw out suggestions - have dark circles with very little undereye creases at the moment.

I mentioned one in the post, you might have to go back to it for the actual name as I was looking at it as I typed! It's by La Roche Posay and I think it's tolraine something or other.

I have an underactive thyroid which can cause dark circles, of course I got that symptom!! It's the only eye cream that can help ease them.

There's a blogger called the beautiful truth who has the dark circles problem too, you could look through her eye cream reviews if you had some time one day!
