Planning a trip to do main civil war sites. Going to take in Washington and Im a bit of a Lincoln devotee. Anybody do Gettysburg and any tips? I can't do just basic accommodation anymore so if you haves used some really good hotels that would be great.

Have done a large amount of the civil war trail over the years from South Carolina all the way up to Washington taking in most of the battle sites on the way. Gettysburg was incredible. The town itself is well preserved and is worth taking a good walk around, visiting the many shops dedicated to selling artifacts from the war.The Gettysburg battle site is a fascinating place and wonderfully preserved. There is a visitors centre where you join one of guided tours or rent an audio guide and drive through the battlefields yourself stopping at the many important areas along the way.Because it's a relatively recent event it's very well documented and there are photographs and personal accounts all along the site.If you get a chance and have time, try and visit Harpers Ferry.

Second that. The visitors centre is excellent and a must see. Artifacts, guns etc on display.

You will also see a lot of Irish names on headstones too.
