Hi, need to get access to mobile broadband for a few days each week at mobile home. I don't have a phone (i know dark ages and all that) but was thinking of getting a device (router?) but don't really know anything about it. I will need it to use a laptop and ipad device - no gaming but will need to be able to stream some live TV like Netflix and access the web. Can somebody help me? I dont want to enter into monthly contracts so a rolling 30-day contract could suit. Help needed as I don't understand the lingo required to deal with somebody in a shop!
    Thanks in advance.

You will need to know what the signal of each of the operators is like at the MH to answer that. The shop will work off a map which is at best approximate and likely to be displayed by each supplier to be much higher than reality.

Can you ask anyone near where your MH is what mobile service they have and what type of data connection do they get? This will get you started. The more people you ask, the better info you will have to zero in on a supplier.

Streaming stuff from Netflix will be quite heavy on the quality of service needed but also on the amount of data used.

Something like 3 AYCE or similar would seem to be suitable, IF you can get good signal at the MH.

get a miband second hand off ebay and get a 3 mobile sim. for €20 a month you cant go wrong. It all just depends on the mobile coverage where ur mobile home is.

Hi TomOnBoard, yea I've asked around and it looks like Three does a good 3g signal - so too does Vodafone.

    sorry midband.

e.g. a dongle or a little router. you will pick one up handy on fleabay for around 30euro unlocked to all networks

There ya go, so. Only 2 shops to visit. Go in and explain what you're looking for and see what they can offer. They will try to sell you a phone and package so don't be swayed, just listen to what they offer and understand the price and T&Cs. You may end up going down the e-Bay route to get a used midband device, but that might be too much hassle for you. Also understand that some operators deny you the right to put a phone SIM in a device other than a phone, although generally you'll get away with it. Its also feasible to use a phone as a router by doing what's called a tether- again assuming the operator will allow it. This would work by a mobile phone with a strong high quality signal allowing your laptop etc to dsee the phone as a WiFi device and work through it.

Meteor's current deal is worth looking at.

They do a 180 day pass with 50GB for €30.
Might work out cheaper than €20 every month if you're not using it much.
You can top up if you run out for the same again. The 180 day expiry is the best you'll get.
Meteor broadband SIM is only €1, and I got mine for nothing last week as I was buying more than €20 credit.
I already had a 4G mobile router. I've actually got about 4 of them at this stage, as we're mobile broadband only out here until the Summer!

Rural Wifi is a pretty good option

Another option depending on your data allowance might be using your phone as a mobile hotspot to connect to.

I have a mobile home and use vodafone mobile broadband.....it is the only one that works in the area. I would use 3 if it worked for us as it is better value. You really need to find out which provider gives you the best signal in your location.......ask the neighbours!
