Implant vs. crown, any other options?

I have to have a tooth out in the next couple of years, it has been filled but it's not going to last. So had a convo with my dentist about my options and was given 2, implant which would be €1700+ and a post crown which would be €1100+. Both of these are a lot of money to me, I'm a mature student and my income is very limited. I want to start saving for it. I'm leaning towards getting the implant as it would last longer so says the dentist anyway. Is there any other options available to me here? I would prefer to stay with my own dentist as I have a phobia and have become comfortable with her but if I can get it cheaper elsewhere then I will have to do it.

I had an implant and am very happy with it. Got it done cheap in Ireland as I volunteered to be a "demo" patient for a friend's wife who was doing a course supervised by a very experienced dentist. I'd say if you can possible stretch to it an implant would be the way to go. I had it done under local and opted not to take the light sedation on offer. The main discomfort was an aching jaw from having to keep my mouth open for so long during the procedure. It's usually a two stage procedure - implant is placed and then you return a few months later (can't remember how long exactly) to have the tooth part fitted. A lot of dentists won't do implants in smokers as failure rates are much higher.

I will probably go with the implant due to the longevity. It's just difficult for me as I'm not earning right now and won't be for a couple of years. I'm going to see if I can get a consultation with a larger clinic that specialises in this kind of thing, apparently it can be cheaper. I am a reformed smoker, would only have the odd one when I am drinking a couple of times a year.

1700 euro sounds very good. I was given a quote of 3000 + in Cork for an implant!
