Courier personally responsible

I've recently started working for a courier company. I drive their vehicles. I reversed into a post today & damaged the back of the company van. The owner of the courier company is now asking me to be personally responsible financially for the cosmetic damage. Is this right?

Is it owner operated? Many couriers operate as franchises now (Fastway, Nightline, parts of AnPost).

The cost of the damage is probably below the cost of insurance excess plus

If someone did reverse into a post and wanted to claim through the company insurance their personal no claims would be gone.

This is more an employment issue than a legal one

You were given the van in good condition and should return it the same
