How accurate is the Virgin Media site speed test?

Anyone know how accurate the Virgin Media site speed test is?
Recently my internet speeds have seemed to slow down during the evening
i notice it takes longer to load sites and watching videos.
I test my speed on the VM website and it results are always close to max
    speed (240).
When i test on Speedtest.net i get close to max speed during the day but in the evening 7.30pm-11.30pm i get around 15mb.(i test on different servers too)

So how/why is the VM site speed test showing me i'm getting full speed when i'm clearly not?

    Anyone else experience this?

You are getting full speed, to the virgin test site. Your speeds elsewhere may differ.

This is how the internet works, Virgin only sell you the connection between your house and themselves. Once you are out onto the "main" internet nothing can be guaranteed.

For example, say the website you are trying to download from is heavily loaded (too many people all trying to access stuff). You may notice slow speeds in this case, but your connection is actually performing perfectly.

Definitely not with Virgin since they have a history of deciding where you can use that speed by misrouting or throttling.

I've been with VM the last 7 months and I've never seen any throttling at any time of day or night.

I'm experiencing this too. Meant to be getting 240mbs and I do during the day, but I'm only getting between 8-15 from speedtest.net in the evenings. I've been onto customer support and they tell me the line I'm connected to is only 50% utilisation.

Is this throttling from Liberty Global, or are they incorrect about it not being oversubscribed?

99/100 that is contention issue in your area i presume you testing it over Ethernet with nothing else going on in the background?

Yeah tried it on ethernet as well as Wifi (AC standard right beside the modem).

They are saying that they are checking the modem logs and everything looks fine on their side. They even emailed me the utilisation graphs

They have had congestion in the past on some of the undersea cables on either side of the Island. But they are usually pretty decent at just upgrading/purchasing more bandwidth.
