Hi, is there anything I can do to prevent further rust on a car exhaust after I remove it the first time ?

Where on the exhaust? The tailpipe?
    Go for a stainless system!

Oh yeah sorry , it's the tail pipe it's an old car and I really only need it for another month but I would like to keep rust from forming without having to spend a fortune

It rusts from the inside out, condensation and corrosive gases.
Halfords have stuff you can paint on the outside if you think it will help.

Oh I didn't realise that , I'd be better off just spending the money to buy the new part.

Don't spend anything if you're only keeping it a month.

You could use metal polish or try wet sanding it very carefully.
