What is wrong with shops nowadays

    When I was a lad my dad used to send me to the shop for fags and beer. He would give me 20p for my trouble. I sent my young lad, 11 to the shop the last day, for fags and beer, the feckers refused to serve him.

    Why would a shop not sell beer and cigarettes to a child? God I have no idea. Sure what harm could come of it.


    Op, that's irresponsible parenting plain and simple.

    If you send a note with the child saying the fags and beer are for a responsible adult then they'll usually fall for it.

    It's illegal. But back in the day, my main chore was to go to the shop for the Evening Press and 20 Players (the unfiltered ones).

    There was a shop in Stoneybatter in the mid-90s, that did a roaring trade in selling single cigarettes to the local urchins.

    Happy times.

    Don't even try to pretend you didn't know that it's illegal to sell alcohol and cigarettes to children. I'm not believing it.

    Yeah my ma used to send me for 10 blue and keep the change. I'm sure it still happens in snall local shops. Although it was still illegal even when we did it.

    Nowadays the HSE or somebody conduct tests by getting underage to see if they get served or somebody borderline legal age so see if they might get hit for ID. Shops decide is it worth the trouble
