    He's in our European squad!

How is Bill Johnston playing this year? It’s great to see him get a run of games together in the Celtic cup. A good prospect, who’s had a tough time with injuries.

Doesn't matter how he is playing, will never see first team with the current back logs of 10's, if I was him I would walk out the door to Ulster/Connaght or head to France/England. Better chance of progressing your career
He's 21. He's obviously rated and Munster are investing development time in him after bringing him into the senior panel ahead of schedule.

Given the age and profile of the other outhalves, he'd be mad to move. He has a fantastic shot at being in the first choice 23 at one of Europe's top sides by the time he's 23.

He's had an awful injury record and Munster have stuck with him regardless. Carbery aside, he's the only 10 signed up for next season. I think at worst he'll be the third choice and get opportunities during the RWC.

Bill Johnston was 100% off the tee for Munster A last night 4 cons 4 pens from all sorts of angles. Super cross field kick set Liam Coombes away in the first half as well.

On the basis of last nights display he def deserves some PRO14 minutes. Having Keatley, Hanrahan and Bleyendaal ahead of him doesn’t help though but I’d expect him to go past those before the year is out

You'd wonder what will happen Keatley once Bleyendaal is back

Well, Keatley had taken top spot back before TB was injured so I think it's impossible to say who is where in the pecking order after Carbery. I'm still baffled as to how Keatley has been used think season, however.

Keatley is above him, like he was before TB got injured.

I'd be surprised if Bleyendaal got a new contract after June. He's been riddled with injuries that are fairly serious, and even then he's not been the best when playing. Could see 2 out of 3 from JJ/Keats/TB gone after this season I reckon.

Great win for the As against a good Scarlets side, Johnston very impressive by the sound of things

An outstanding display from Munster A secured a very impressive 40-29 win over a strong Scarlets A side in the Celtic Cup at Irish Independent Park on Friday night.

Jack Stafford, Liam Coombes, Ben Healy and Sean O’Connor touched down for Peter Malone’s side with captain Bill Johnston immaculate off the tee with four conversions and four penalties.

It was a less than ideal start for Scarlets as winger Morgan Williams was sin-binned in the opening minute for tackling a player in the air with Munster taking advantage immediately.

After kicking to the right corner, Munster set up for a rolling maul and clever play from Darren O’Shea saw the lock peel to the blindside and pop a pass to Stafford. The scrum-half was faced by two defenders but finished expertly to give Munster an early lead.

Johnston’s touchline conversion made it 7-0 and Munster were up and running.

A dominant Scarlets rolling maul on 10 minutes saw the visitors go over for their first try through Shaun Evans and Dan Jones added the extras to level the game at 7-7 as Williams returned to the fray.

Having gained the upper hand, Scarlets struck for a second try on 16 minutes. Munster had been defending bravely on their own line but the pressure finally told as prop Rhys Fawcett burrowed over from close range and Jones converted to move Scarlets 14-7 in front.

Munster A fought back and a straightforward Johnston penalty on 20 minutes reduced the arrears.

The hosts were back in front after 27 minutes with Coombes released by Stephen Fitzgerald down the left flank and the winger showed remarkable pace to burn clear to score. Johnston’s conversion from the left touchline was good to make it 17-all after 27 minutes.

With Calvin Nash and Matt More having departed with knocks, Munster were forced into a rejig. Replacement Ben Healy took the place of Johnston at out-half with the captain moving in to partner replacement Alex McHenry in the centres as Shane Daly went out to the wing.

Johnston initiated another excellent Munster attack as his crossfield kick set Coombes free up the left flank with the move eventually leading to another penalty opportunity for Johnston. The kick sailed through the posts and Munster led 20-17 after 32 minutes.

An excellent last-ditch tackle by Coombes on Scarlets no.8 Tom Phillips just before the break preserved the Munster lead as the hosts went into the break up by three.

A perfect start to the second half saw Healy struck after just 45 seconds. The score came after Jones’ attempted chip over the defence was blocked and out-half Healy snapped up the loose ball and raced nearly 50 metres to score. Johnston added the extra two and Munster led by 10.

Scarlets A were back in it on 47 minutes as they exploited an overlap on the right wing as Steff Evans released Morgan to score and Jones’ second conversion made it 27-24.

A third Johnston penalty after a high tackle on Shane Daly gave Munster some breathing room at 30-24.

Scarlets were in for their third try after 58 minutes as Steff Evans pounced on a kick in behind the defence but Jones was off target with the conversion and Munster led by a point as we entered the final quarter.

Steff Hughes was sin-binned for a high tackle on Healy with 63 minutes gone to give Munster a one-man advantage again and Peter Malone’s side took full advantage once more.

Jack Daly powered through a gap after taking a great line to move Munster A deep into opposition territory and a crossfield kick found O’Connor in acres of space to score Munster’s fourth try.

Johnston’s all-important conversion moved Munster 37-29 ahead and his fourth penalty after 76 minutes sealed a 40-29 victory.

Seems to be some noise about concern for Alby in the news today, I know he got strapped and was a little slow moving, but hopefully he's ok especially with next week coming fast.

Hopefully he'll be okay, thought he went well yesterday given the circumstances of only being in the country a few weeks and his second game.

Would be absolutely shíte luck to have your injury replacement get injured 2 games in.

Duncan Williams and Jack Stafford going to Exeter then. Far from ideal.

Hopefully the injury is not too serious. Based on his performances I'd be happy to get Mathewson extended until the end of the season.

Second week in a row a key player was kept on the field in the second half despite needing attention. What is JVG playing at?

Was it his try where he picked up a knock? IIRC he was hobbling after getting up.

Was going to post this in the match thread but I think I'll avoid whatever it is that is going on over there.
Didn't see the game so only going off what clips I managed to see.
Congrats to Leinster on the win.
Thought the ref got the Earls penalty try yellow card correct, Earls was unlucky in that the tackle was just a fraction too early. Lowe made sure the ref saw it which is exactly what you want from your winger.
The Arnold tackle on (Henshaw??) was never a deliberate knock on, not sure how the officials came to that decision.
It looks like that the ball comes off Arnold's head and Earls then plays it from on offside position. so ya penalty to Leinster either way there.
I read that Munster got four penalties on the 5m line in succession and there wasn't even a warning.
and yes I saw the pictures of O'Mahonys binding before someone jumps down my throat.
My point here would be, at what point does the ref start giving warnings or yellow cards. Five penalties? Six?
It sounds like this was our best away performance of the season which is a positive.
Its easy to put in a big performance away to Leinster and I'd expect the same next week away to Exeter, I think the real test of our away form
Yesterday we were missing. Marshall, Ryan, JOD, Murray, Bleyendaal, Farrell and Haley from the 23.
Our squad depth is improving but comparing the two benches yesterday (and that is with Leinster resting a few) shows we still are still a good bit behind,
Expect Cloete and R.Scannell to come into the starting 15 against Exeter.
    Should be a cracker:)

If he doesn't impress soon, I'd say he could struggle to break through with the first team when Conway is fit.

Thought Goggin was excellent last night, I'd be starting him and scannell at centre next week - I also thought his "held up" attempt was worth a look by the TMO, thought it looked down initially and then arms got under....Whitehouse was strong in his opinion though.

I also think I'd go with the same pack as last night, but bring cloete on with 30mins to go.

The rest of the team picks itself - fingers crossed for Alby

Agreed on Goggin, seems to be getting better and better as the season goes on.

Very impressed with Mathewson too, seems very vocal and is happy to take the ball off the forwards when they’re running into walls. Crucial he plays well and stays in as long as possible.

The weekend was a good warm up for Exeter but I'm a bit concerned with how blunt Munster still look. Lot's of instances of carriers getting isolated yesterday and whilst Leinster didn't capitalise as well as they could, Exeter are fast out of the blocks this season and will really punish any weaknesses around the breakdown.

Struggling to see a win but growing increasingly fearful of a season derailing defeat. No doubt about it, as big a test as yesterday was - next week is a step up with higher stakes.

If there was ever a game for Murray to arrive back for this is it.

Bad news re Mathewson. - Scrum-half Alby Mathewson suffered a knee injury during the Leinster game and will undergo a scan today to determine the extent of his injury.

Good news -There is positive news on the injury front for hooker Rhys Marshall and tighthead prop John Ryan as they will both return to training this week ahead of the European action.

Out-half Tyler Bleyendaal also returns to full training this week. https://munsterrugby.ie/2018/10/08/munster-squad-update-pre-exeter-leinster-a/

If we have to go with Duncan this Saturday, all my positivity from last week goes out the window.

Calvin Nash suffered an ankle injury while playing for Munster A on Friday night and will undergo an MRI today to determine the extent of his injury.

The following are progressing with rehabilitation: Liam O’Connor (knee), Conor Oliver (toe), Jack O’Donoghue (knee), Conor Murray (neck), Neil Cronin (shoulder), James Hart (knee), Chris Farrell (knee), Ronan O’Mahony (ankle).

    https://munsterrugby.ie/2018/10/08/munster-squad-update-pre-exeter-leinster-a/

    Possible team:
    Kilcoyne, N Scannell, Archer, Kleyn, Beirne, POM, Cloete, Stander;
Williams, Carbery, Earls, R Scannell, Arnold, Sweetnam, Conway

Marshall, Cronin, J Ryan, Holland, TOD, Stafford, JJH, Goggin

In the post match conference JvG seemed to suggest that the centres would be rotated. I'd expect Rory Scannell to start at 12.

Great to see Tyler back, didn't look good there for a while. John Ryan's timing couldn't be much better also.

Presume we'll see the same team this weekend bar Mathewson?

Jesus Christ, that's a hammer blow. If Matthewson is going for a knee scan, it's likely that he's out for the next 2 weeks anyway.

Ryan returning would be a very timely boost. Normally, I'd expect them to keep him in cotton wool this week and let him return to a full training environment but the drop off after Ryan/Archer is too significant so I think he'll be asked to bench and give 20 minutes this week which will hopefully be fine for him.

Cloete could feel a little hard done by given his performances before being benched. I wouldn't be surprised to see him coming in and TOD drop to the bench.

Scannell and Taute to be involved too in some capacity?

Taute was awful in the last appearance against Cardiff, he looked off the pace. I would be shocked if he gets into the 23 over the next two games.
