Ireland's most picturesque train journey?

This is possibly not the correct forum for this but myself and my boyfriend would like to take a train journey in Ireland soon both for the enjoyment of the journey itself and the destination. We want value for our money :D

What would be considered the more picturesque routes by train? The destination is not hugely important, we can find something interesting to see or do in most places I'm sure. Another idea was to take one of the steam trains that operate from time to time but while that would be very exciting in itself, they don't seem to go very far and you'd be there and back in an afternoon; we're moreso looking for somewhere to stay overnight/for the weekend and train back.

    Any suggestions?

The Dublin to Wexford line is lovely, and Wexford is a lovely town to spend a weekend in. Journey time is about two-and-a-half hours.

This depends on where you are going from. I will assume you will start out from Dublin.

I am no expert but the train network is not that extensive in Ireland and the best destinations from Dublin would be either Westport or Killarney imo. Both go through the flat midlands so I wouldn't expect the scenery to be the best you could get but train trip through Kerry especially should be scenic.

Both towns Killarney and Westport offer pretty good things to do and a good atmosphere during the summer months.

Dublin to Wexford hands down for the best views, make sure you sit on the left side of the train for coastal view the whole way.

Would second that for the Dublin to Rosslare line which serves Wexford.

Waterford - Clonmel - Limerick is also a scenic run through the mountains of South Tipp. Cahir is a pleasant town to stop off in with a fine castle and the Swiss cottage.
Rosslare - Wellingtonbridge - Waterford (the continuation of the Waterford-Limerick line) was very scenic but service was suspended in 2010.

I would also endorse Dublin-Wexford. The rail journey wins hands-down and Wexford is a nice town to spend a night or two.

While Killarney and Westport are great destinations, the rail journeys themselves (from Dublin) are not that interesting. There is nice scenery on the section from Rathmore to Killarney but it only makes up a small portion of the overall journey.

Thanks for all the info people, it sounds like Dublin - Wexford is a winner!

This also sounds like a trip worth doing at some stage :)

Except it's more often than not a bus these days due to driver shortages at Waterford.

At the other end of the country, Coleraine to Derry is the best train journey in Ireland.

Belfast to Derry or Dublin to Wexford.

Belfast to Coleraine is yawn inducing - it is only the short stretch from Coleraine to Derry that is anyway scenic.

I second Coleraine to Derry. Could go Dublin -Belfast then Belfast Derry staying in Belfast one night....

Waterford to Limerick Junction is pretty and the Kerry line has it's moments but hands down, the spin down to Wexford wins hands down. The legend that is Dan Renehan used to say that it was an honour to sit in the drivers cab every day to view it.

One other to consider is the Dublin to Belfast run; it also has the best on board catering :)

Only two trains a day though. If you stop off in Cahir, you'll have a 12.5 hour wait until the next train to Limerick Junction.
