    The Guards are citizens.

Absolutely not. It is one of the top ten careers that has the highest proportion of psychopaths.

Going by Maurice McCabe I'd say yes.

Going by what was done to Maurice McCabe I'd say no.

There are several studies on the careers that psychopaths are attracted to, according to Kevin Duttons study -
    1. CEO
    2. Lawyer
    3. Media (TV/Radio)
    4. Salesperson
    5. Surgeon
    6. Journalist
    7. Police Officer
    8. Clergy
    9. Chef
    10. Civil Servant

Of course politician should be on that list too, not sure if he counted them under civil servant. There are several lists and studies, police officer is in them all.

I've met some police in the past year who seem to think there is such thing as making ''immoral money'' even though it's legal. It got me thinking about the worlds billionaires and how bad they must feel.

No and I wouldn't expect them to.

They are paid to enforce the law, no more, no less.

No. Police are people just like the rest of us. I'd say many just go into it because it's a job they reckon they could do, not because of some inner sense of righteousness.

Have a look at the Garda Recruitment forum, at the things that concern applicants. Spoiler alert: serving the public interest is not high on the list. :o

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I'm not sure about their moral integrity but their numeracy would seem to fall below par.

I thought they had a tendency to overestimate.

In theory, yes. In practice, not really.

Considering the way the public treats the Gardai I'm not terribly surprised if they behave differently that they're supposed to. It's a difficult bloody job without idiots popping up every five seconds to criticize. I've had good and bad encounters with the Gardai... There's 'bad apples' in every type of employment. Give em a break.

Speaking partially from personal experience, specialist divisions have some very good and committed people in them.

But a lot of guards are unfortunately time-servers (at best) or outright corrupt (at worst).

Probably about the same as the rest of the society, now that I come to think of it....
