We are looking to book a sun holiday this year. We are thinking of booking flights and hotel separate. We can't really afford to pay the whole lot upfront now. Does anyone know good sites to book with this in mind. Thinking of booking.com. anyone every tried them for Sun holidays? Or are we best to book directly with the hotel/apartments?

I use booking.com a fair bit and have used them in the past for summer holidays. Being able to pay on arrival is a big help rather than forking out the full amount up front.

The beauty of it is you can cancel without penalty in most properties too - but be sure to check the cancellation and booking terms as they're different for a lot of properties.

travelrepublic and alpharooms are great sites for booking hotels and apts. You can pay a deposit of €1 at times as well.

Click & Go will do €1 deposit too...
    www.clickandgo.com

Just be clear though that even though it's a €1 deposit you are liable for the full amount once you book.

A lot of hotels will offer you a lower price if you book and pay upfront and optionally a slightly higher price if you want to pay when you get there, with the obvious condition that you cancel with a given amount of notice, often 48 hours before you're due to arrive.

So my advice is to book direct. A lot of booking websites will pretend to be the actual website of the hotel itself but they are not, the trick is to look for a landline phone number and street address for the hotel on the first page of the website, if they're missing then you are dealing with a third party and it's most likely that you will be made to pay upfront with no cancellation option.
