Of course there is a chip in the key, unless it was hot wired.

Try this..... Turn on key to ignition when you here the pump priming (Don't try to start it) 10 x times. Then try and start it on the 11th. You may laugh but I had a similar issue and it worked for me.....

let me know how you get on

    Is battery OK?
Key does have a chip as said above just cause it doesn't have buttons to open doors doesn't mean not chipped.

I remember having a 2003 audi a4 tdi and it wouldnt start due to immobilser problem but this guy deactivated the immob within 2 minutes and she started on any key without chip, that is 9 years ago now though

I was going to ask how this helps the OP then i noticed you are the OP - bizarre!

Also it's posts like this one that make buying a second hand car in this country such a nightmare, de-immobilizing a 5 year old A4 (at the time
) as a quick fix - the mind boggles.

dont get your knickers in a twist,
it was just to get it started and moved at the time, the car was properly fixed later as could invalidate the insurance .

Is the immobilized part of the gauges on these? It is in some other VAG group stuff, so it could be connected to the Speedo flickering?

My guess is alternator on a quick google .. auto.howstuffworks.com dimmed lights AND flickering gauges is mentioned ..

When you turn the key, does the starter motor turn the engine over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭samjames

only the speedo was going wonky at times, the car turns over for 5 seconds then shuts down

Ecu issue or ignition could also be an issue.

That sounds like a key chip problem to me, but I am no expert.

Does the engine actually fire, even for a second?
