Advice on well

My wife and I are in the process of purchasing a property that has its own well. Both of us come from areas with mains water supply so neither of us knows the first thing about wells.

The system that is there looks like it has not been serviced for a few years and has two big blue bottles cylinders beside it as well as some type of filter. One of the blue bottles cylinders is an iron remover but I am not sure what the other is, the only writing on it says "Polyglass with PE inner shell". Does anyone know what the second bottle cylinder is? Also does whatever is in these cylinders bottles run out and need to be replaced?

I presume it is worth getting the water tested before buying and that any water filter company can tell me what I need going forward based on that? Is there anything else I should be aware of in relation to buying a property with a well?

Also I am not sure if it is related but the water tank in the attic has an extensive build up of some kind of black crystalline substance in it. Could this be caused by the water system not working properly or not being serviced regularly?

"two big blue bottles beside it "
    I hate flies:D

I think the second bottle is a water softener. You should get the water biologically and chemically tested, costs about €95. Where are you? Scientific services in Killarney are good. I'd also pay someone like Munster drilling to call out and have a look at the system, better off getting a professional assessment.

I knew when I typed that post someone would say something smart  have fixed it now :D

We are in West Cork. The original suppliers name (water technology) is on it so I am going to give them a call later to see if they can give me any info or have any history on what was installed.
