Simple headlamp on warning

So my wonderful 1995 Starlet Xli, the old model, doesn't have a headlamp warning buzzer - or if it does then it doesn't work. I got a buzzer & followed the simple online instructions. Attach the red to a fuse in the light circuit & the black to a fuse that is switched by the ignition - to act as a floating ground.

But, no matter which fuses I use, it won't work. It's either buzzer on all the time or off all the time. I am wondering if the wiring is different on older cars ?

There should be a buzzzer. Does the drivers door switch work?

Does the buzzer for the keys in work?

A lad on the Starlet forum asked this. There aren't any door switches unless they are hidden inside the doors. The interior light is manual. No buzzer for keys in or if it exists it isn't working

No, if there were door switches they would be pretty obvious. On the body of the car near the lock latch.

I am guessing that it's one of those imports that came in with a very basic spec.

    Couple of questions:

Does the buzzer work in reverse polarity ? This could complicate things a little as if it does the methods I have in mind will need a diode installed or else with the ignition on (ie. car running)and no lights on the buzzer will be on.
But you could always just drive with your side lights on 😋

Does the stereo in the car have a backlight that comes on with the headlights ? It should be possible to do the install from only the back of the radio if so. But you'll need a multimeter/test lamp.

    If not:
Attach the red to the feed to the side lights this will not be at a fuse, it goes from the light switch straight to the headlight
It is probably easiest to access it at the back of the headlight unless someone can tell you where to pick it up under the dash. I'm not familiar with starlets so can't help there

    For the black:
It's probably easiest to use trial and error on the fuses, if you have a meter find a fuse that has continuity to the steel structure of the car (door strap/ outside ring of cigarette lighter etc)

Alternatively for the black pick up the switched ignition in the back of the radio. It's usually yellow/sometimes red if it's an aftermarket stereo, (again I'm not sure about factory colours)

    Any questions shout.

Thanks. I tried switching polarity. I have a mutimeter so next weekend I will have another go. I could rebuild the engine with no problem & I am fine with home electrics. Car electrics have always been puzzling to me.

when you switched polarity did the buzzer work ?

The problem is you've been tapping into the power before the headlight switch so you'll never see the change the headlight switch makes. You need to be after

That is a very interesting answer & probably right. The videos I watched all took the easy option of the fuse box. So naturally that's what I went for.
