46A Dublin Bus

Hi all, I was planning on riding the 46A Dublin Bus route on the 10th of April , 2017. I was going to park the car behind the DART station for 4 euro all day and then walk around to the bus terminus. If I get the 10:36 departure, how long will it take to get to the Phoenix Park terminus on Infirmary Road? How long would it take to walk from the Phoenix Park terminus to the Fifteen Acres? Finally, I was thinking about getting the 16:00 departure on Infirmary Road. How long would it take to get to the Dún Laoghaire terminus? Should I take a later or earlier departure than the 16:00 one?

Any feedback is very much appreciated!

I can only help you with the distance from the terminus to the fifteen acres I'd say 20-25 mins

As far as I know, there is no bus that goes to Glendalough.

1030 or so traffic will be light so travel time will be fairly quick.

Coming back you may be better on the dart as 1600 on can be very busy.

Check Google Maps. It will tell you the drive and walk times.
Perhaps you should go to the visitor centre as you initially planned. There you could get a cup of coffee and sit down to plan your route home.

According to a-b.ie, I would save about 10-15 mins by getting the LUAS and the DART but I don't mind sitting on the bus for about 1hr 25mins.

Cjeck the RTPI app on the Dublin Bus website to monitor how it is moving. 46a is probably the most user friendly bus in terms of frequency, bus lanes etc and it flies along for most of the route. Unfortunately the city centre is a mess at the moment with Luas works and that adds about 20-25 minutes to the northbound journey.

Yeah, good idea. I wasn't too worried about the northbound journey as the N11 has bus lanes and the rush hour traffic will be gone by the time I'm getting the bus. I suppose the city centre will be a bit busy, but that's OK.

Well it costs 5.20 euro both ways. Not too bad. It's 10 mins in the car to Dún Laoghaire. So, I'll leave the house at 10:20. I'll be at the DART Station at 10:30. In 5 mins I get on the 46A. It's about midday then when I get there. And the bus home is at 16:00. Is 4 hours enough or is it too little? The bus arrives in Dún Laoghaire at the latest time of I'd say 17:30. So, I'm home at about 17:45.

The 145 has much the same Luas delays.

Take a trip on the DART to the transport museum in howth, you're near the coast no traffic and you'll get to see some great vintage buses.

The worst of the Luas delays are Dawson St and at College Green. The loop around by Westland Row and Pearse St adds time as well. If you are going anywhere closer than Parnell Square, it is quicker to get off at Stephens Green and walk.

you said on your other thread you had decided against the visitors centre. As I said, Google maps has all the answers regarding distance and time that you need.


The alternative is of course to hire a dublin bike.. Much faster than walking.:)

Yeah, sorry. I looked at the map of the 46A route on the dublin bus website but zoomed in on the Phoenix Park. The Visitor Centre looked a bit far away from the Fifteen Acres so I decided against it on the thread. But then I thought, if it takes 25 mins to get to the Fifteen Acres, would I be able to spend some time there and then walk to the Visitor Centre and still get the 16:00 bus home?

It's a good idea. The reason why I'm getting the 46A is because I am a bus enthusiast and have never been on the 46A nor a VT (a model of Dublin Bus).

I have many other transport options: 111 Dublin Bus from my house to Bray Rd. 145 Dublin Bus from Bray Rd. to near the Phoenix Park and walk.

DART to town and then a LUAS to the Phoenix Park.

7A out to town and then a LUAS to the Phoenix Park.

And many more....

Hoping to end this thread soon. So does anybody know if I would be able to go to the Visitor Centre and the Fifteen Acres, before getting the 16:00 bus home?

Of course this is assuming you get parked at the station in Dun Laoghaire Station and that there are no traffic delays, which are inevitably at 16:00 in the city. Personally speaking I'd bus it to the 46A, travel on the first bus that goes and whatever one that gets you back from the Park, and then a bus home. All this will be covered on your Leap at the capped rate of €7 for the day, somewhat more then the bus fares plus parking tickets.

On the Phoenix Park centre, it's a good 2 miles away from the Infirmary Road gate. The 15 Acres is about a mile again from the centre. You'd get them both in in 4 hours but with walking time there and back to allow for, well you will need well over an hour. Maybe try get over earlier or save one for another day?
