Jay Bruce gone to the Indians for basically a bag of balls.

Its a good trade for the Indians

Yeah great trade. He's been handy enough this year on a team having a terrible year. And getting him in return for a guy not in your top 50 prospects is a steal.

Apparently the Yankees offered better prospects for him but the cheapskate Mets went with Cleveland as that deal had them paying his remaining salary in full whereas the Yankees wanted the Mets to eat half of it.

Among the worst owners in baseball the Wilpons. Should've been forced to sell the team when their Madoff ties came to light. There are probably more despicable people owning teams - the guy that owns the Marlins seems like a real first-rate lowlife, but the Wilpons are just a bunch of thieves afaict.

Can't be anyway close to being true. They got basically nothing back. Well, apart from a guy with a porn star name (Ryan Ryder).

EDIT - On the plus side for The Mets, Dom Smith's getting promoted tomorrow.

Clear out for the Mets continues. Neil Walker going to the Brewers for a catcher's mask and some shin pads*

    * may or may not be what he was actually traded for but probably won't be far off the value they get in return. Another salary dump in all likelihood.

He was in the lineup for tonight's game too.

Last few 2d basemen for the Mets: Justin Turner (all star) Daniel Murphy (all star) Neil Walker (borderline, had a really good start on a career till injury). Dilson Herrera (traded for Jay Bruce, still languishing in the minors)

Now? Wilmer Flores. Feels like this rebuild will take a really long while.

Would have liked to have kept Bruce until the end of the season. I could even see the logic of giving him a qualifying offer. But Sandy on the front office guys had other ideas.

The Walker trade looks like a pure salary dump. And I suspect one or two more will be departing before the trade window shuts. On the plus side the Mets should have a lot of money to spend in free agency. But you know what they say about a fool and his money!

Can't remember where I read it or whether I just dreamt it but I don't think a team can make a qualifying offer to a player two years in a row so that option wasn't available for Walker. I joke about the what the Mets are getting (or not getting) back in these trades they're making but I'm only going to get really upset if the money they save and they're up to about $13m now with Grandy and Cabrera still to go, isn't put into the team next season and instead ends up in the Wilpon's pockets.

I'd better not read in the offseason that free agent target A signs with some other team because the Mets get outbid by some small market team with a smaller payroll.

Turner and Murphy. Their names should forever be linked to the 'great' Sandy Alderson's legacy. Whenever he he praised for something, those two should be thrown back in his face.

Your right about the qualifying offer. So Walker was gone at the end of the season

Big blow for the Nats if Harper's injury is serious.

And the video didn't look great. Hate seeing any player get a bad injury but when a great player goes down it's even worse.

No damage apart from a bone bruise for Harper. He got lucky

Very lucky! That's hard to believe. Looked like he had completely done his knee.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭The Reservoir Dubs Anchorman

Bone bruise can be really sore and timetables for recovery arent great. He'll be bakc in time for the playoffs but a bad time to get an injury. Still it could have been worse.

With Trea and Werth coming back soon, the line up is going to get stronger again and hopefully then get Harper back in time to get some form for the playoffs!

Astros working on a deal for Verlander

Stanton's cleared waivers if anyone wants to trade everyone decent in their organisation for him and his massive salary...!!!!

Astros working on a deal for Verlander

Weren't there some disgruntled voices in the Astros locker room after their inactivity in the trade market before the deadline. This might be a way of appeasing them. I know he's not the Verlander of old (I blame Kate Upton) but he'd still be a good addition to a playoff team.

I'd gladly lose all my form for Kate Upton

I'll never get tired of watching a team turning a triple play*

(*cue the Mets hitting into one tonight)

I'm the same, I love them. Always reminds me of the scene in The Odd Couple film where Felix calls Oscar at the ballgame (he's in the press booth) and causes him to miss seeing a triple play. Oscar is not amused!

I also love the old 'strike him out/throw him out' double play.

    Great with Minayas players.

Back to Corca Dhuibne tomorrow. Was fun to see some games in real time. Too bad they lost most of them.

This, and when a line drive is caught and they get him the runner at first.

Aaron Judge sets MLB record for most number of consecutive games with a strikeout. Oh my.

That poxy Home Run Derby is to blame for me

That poxy Home Run Derby is to blame for me

Well he hit a HR to the moon last night....!!!

Keith Law had a good theory about the HR Derby curse yesterday which I thought was interesting. Basically he was comparing home runs who struggle after it to a hitter who hits for an average of .300 for the season. Now he doesn't hit .300 every month, he'll hit .350 for a month, then .250 the next etc. It goes up and down.

Likewise with HR guys. The HR derby hitters are usually the guys who are hot for the first part of the season but in most cases, even without the derby, they wouldn't be able to keep that pace up for the whole year so they're bound to come back to earth and not keep up the pace and even go into a slump in part two of the season.

I'm not saying he's right but it's worth thinking about.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,941 ✭✭✭krustydoyle

Heard one or two analysts on ESPN saying that pitchers have just figured him out and it's up to him to make changes to his technique etc

9 runs for the Reds v Chicago in the 2nd inning today. Crazy stuff.

(Mets have scored 9 runs in 3 games by comparison)
